Trachtenkirchweih am Breitenstein
The Trachtlerkirwa am Breitenstein is the traditional Trachtenkirchweih (traditional costume fair) of the Heimat- und Trachtenverein (local heritage and costume association) D'Ossinger Königstein. It is celebrated annually over three days around Trinity Sunday (Trinitatis) on the Breitenstein – a striking mountain with a chapel near Königstein in the Oberpfalz, Amberg-Sulzbach district in the Bavarian region of Oberpfalz.
Customs and Traditional Costume
With the Kirwa, the D'Ossinger costume association preserves a vibrant tradition of Upper Palatinate folk culture. Traditional costume, folk dance, brass band music, and the church service at the Breitenstein Chapel form the established framework. Youth work is particularly visible: the afternoon dedicated to the traditional costume children and youth with a folk dance program is a highlight of the festival.
Program over Three Days
The festival begins on Saturday at 5:30 PM with the opening in the festival tent below the Breitenstein Chapel; from 8:00 PM, a band will play for the Kirchweihtanz (consecration dance). On Trinity Sunday, a festive church service will be held at 9:00 AM, musically accompanied by the Männergesangverein Kürmreuth. At 2:00 PM, the afternoon for the traditional costume children and youth begins, followed in the evening from 7:00 PM by the Heimatabend (homeland evening) of the West region of the Oberpfälzer Gauverband. Monday concludes the Kirwa with brass band music in the festival tent.
A Mountain Full of Tradition
The Breitenstein with its chapel is a popular excursion destination in the region. During the Trachtlerkirwa, it transforms into a lively festival site where locals and guests from all over the Upper Palatinate region experience customs and conviviality. The festival is an authentic example of Bavaria's cherished traditional costume and Kirwa culture.
