About Kirwa Niederärndt

The Kirwa Niederärndt is the traditional Kirchweih (church fair) of the Niederärndt district of Edelsfeld in the Oberpfalz region (Amberg-Sulzbach district, Bavaria). It is celebrated every year on the last weekend of July around the Patron Saint's Day of the historic Simultankirche (conjoined church) St. Josef — one of the oldest churches in the entire district, with roots reaching back to the late 12th century. The Edelsfeld Volunteer Fire Brigade organizes the Kirwa on the Niederärndt festival grounds, featuring a festival tent, brass band music, dancing, and traditional Upper Palatinate snacks (Brotzeit).

A Kirchweih over one of the oldest churches in the Oberpfalz

The Kirwa Niederärndt is one of the most traditional village church fairs in the Amberg-Sulzbach district. It is celebrated every year on the last weekend of July — according to old custom, the Patron Saint's Day of the Simultankirche St. Josef falls on the last Sunday in July. The Romanesque hilltop church above the Lohbachtal valley dates back to the late 12th century and is one of the oldest churches in the entire district. Since 1652, it has also been the only Simultankirche in the municipality of Edelsfeld — meaning it is used jointly by the Protestant and Catholic parishes — which lends the place a cross-denominational festival culture.

Niederärndt — a small district with a grand festival culture

Niederärndt is one of several districts of the municipality of Edelsfeld, located in the southern part of the Amberg-Sulzbach district, at the junction between the Franconian Jura and the Upper Palatinate Jura. The municipality maintains a remarkable variety of Kirchweihen throughout the year — the Hahnenkamm-Fest, Kirchweih Weißenberg, and Kirwa Niederärndt are the best known. The Kirwa Niederärndt is the festive summer highlight of the district.

Course of the Kirwa

The Edelsfeld Volunteer Fire Brigade organizes the festival on the Niederärndt festival grounds. The typical course of an Upper Palatinate village Kirwa spans three days: Friday evening beer tapping and opening, Saturday festival operations with brass band music and dancing, Sunday festive church service in the Simultankirche St. Josef, followed by a morning pint (Frühschoppen) and the festival's conclusion. Brotzeit (traditional snacks), beer, and dancing characterize the festival — a classic, low-key Kirwa in the truest sense of the word.

Patron Saint's Day in Old Tradition

The festival combines religious and secular celebration: the festive church service on Sunday for the Patron Saint's Day of St. Josef is held in the Simultankirche, after which the village moves to the festival tent. The combination of a spiritual anchor (Patron Saint's Day) with the secular inn celebration is characteristic of the Kirchweih tradition in Upper Bavaria and the Oberpfalz and distinguishes the Kirwa from purely commercial folk festivals.

Location and Character

The Kirwa Niederärndt consciously remains a village festival of manageable size and local character. It primarily attracts visitors from Edelsfeld and the surrounding districts, as well as from neighboring municipalities. Those seeking the authentic charm of an Upper Palatinate summer Kirwa away from large-scale events will find it here.

The Kirwa Niederärndt 2026 will be celebrated on the weekend of July 25 to 27, 2026, on the Niederärndt festival grounds. The date follows the centuries-old tradition of the Patron Saint's Day of the Simultankirche St. Josef on the last Sunday in July.

The Edelsfeld Volunteer Fire Brigade traditionally takes charge of the organization, providing the festival tent, catering, and musical entertainment. The typical schedule spans three days, with the festival kickoff on Friday/Saturday evening, the central festival Sunday with a church service and Frühschoppen, and the festival conclusion on Monday.

The detailed program will be published in the weeks leading up to the Kirwa via the FFW Edelsfeld website and the local press. Based on experience, the beer tapping, brass band music, Brotzeit, dance evening, and festive church service are fixed elements of every edition.
