Georgiritt – A Bavarian Spring Tradition
The Georgiritt is a horse pilgrimage widely practiced in Bavaria and Salzburg in honor of St. George (feast day April 23). He is considered the patron saint of knights, riders, horses, travelers, and farmers, and his feast day marks the beginning of the farming summer. In traditional pilgrimages, the community circles the church three times, followed by a church service and blessing of the horses.
Tittmoning Tradition to the Church from 788
In Tittmoning – a small town in the Salzach valley on the border with Austria – the ride takes place on the Sunday after Georgi, so on April 26, 2026. The organizer is the St. Georgsverein Tittmoning-Kirchheim. The destination of the horse pilgrimage is the St. George's Church in the Kirchheim district, whose roots date back to its first mention in 788. The route leads from Tittmoning town square through the Laufener Tor, over Schmerbach, and out into the countryside.
Around 200 Horses, Traditional Costume Parade, Music
Every year, the procession impresses with festively decorated horses, magnificent teams of horses, wagons, music and riding groups, as well as club delegations in traditional costumes and historical attire. Around 200 horses from the Rupertiwinkel region and the neighboring Salzburg region participate. At Kirchheim, the church is circled three times, followed by a church service and blessing of the horses.
Tittmoning – Salzach Town with a Baroque Ensemble
Tittmoning has around 6,000 inhabitants and is located in the Traunstein district directly on the Salzach river. The historic town ensemble with its magnificent town square and the castle above the town is one of the most beautiful in Upper Bavaria. The Georgiritt harmoniously blends with this townscape and is one of the emotional highlights of the Tittmoning festival calendar.
