Traditional autumn market with Sunday shopping in Tittmoning's town square
In late summer and early autumn, the town of Tittmoning in the Traunstein district, located directly on the Salzach river on the Austrian border, celebrates its Rupertimarkt. The name goes back to Saint Rupert of Salzburg, the first abbot and bishop of St. Peter's, who is considered the patron saint of the so-called Rupertiwinkel – that historical region between the Inn and Salzach rivers where Tittmoning, Laufen, Waging, and Tachenberg are located. His feast day on September 24th gives the market its name.
The stage for the market is Tittmoning's expansive town square, one of the most beautiful squares in the Salzach valley: lined with colourful burgher houses, the town hall, and the parish church of St. Laurentius, and overlooked by Tittmoning Castle. On this historical ensemble, numerous traders spread out their stalls on market day – offering leather goods, hats, traditional costumes, textiles, regional specialties, schnapps, and handicrafts.
The Rupertimarkt is embedded in a Sunday shopping event in the old town: while the market runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the shops open their doors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. A colourful supporting programme – from music and culinary stalls to activities for children – ensures that the market day becomes a family outing for the entire region.
Anyone visiting the Rupertimarkt experiences more than just a market day: Tittmoning is one of the historical salt trading towns on the Tauern footpaths; its citizens have maintained connections with Salzburg on the other side of the Salzach for generations. The market brings this tradition to life – as a legacy of salt trade, monastic economy, and agricultural sales rituals, which lives on today in the form of enjoyment stalls, crafts, and neighbourly conviviality.
The 2026 edition of the Rupertimarkt will be celebrated on Sunday, September 13, 2026. On Tittmoning's town square, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., the familiar scene of market stalls, music, culinary offerings, and encounters between Tittmoning's citizens and visitors from the entire Rupertiwinkel will unfold.
Parallel to the market, the shops in Tittmoning's old town will open their doors for Sunday shopping from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Thus, the day combines the charm of a traditional annual market with the urban character of a shopping Sunday against the backdrop of the castle and the Salzach.
