About Castle Days Tittmoning

For three days, the Historical Castle Days transform Tittmoning Castle high above the Salzach into a medieval spectacle with sword fights, tournaments, jousting, parades, and nocturnal fire shows. Market activities, authentic camp life, craft demonstrations, and a children's program with a carousel and children's tournament complement the program within the historic walls of the former archiepiscopal castle. The event is one of the best-known medieval events in Southeast Bavaria and attracts thousands of visitors every year from the Berchtesgadener Land, Rupertiwinkel, and the neighboring Salzburger Land.

Medieval life above the Salzach

The Historical Castle Days Tittmoning take place annually at the impressive Tittmoning Castle – one of the most significant and best-preserved castle complexes in the southeastern Bavarian Rupertiwinkel region. Situated high above the Salzach River, the grounds provide a backdrop into which the medieval spectacle with camps, market stalls, and stage programs fits perfectly.

Knights, Jousting, and Tournaments

On the castle's expansive grounds, knights and squires showcase their skills: sword fights, staff combat, grand knights' tournaments, and jousting (lances used by charging knights) are among the highlights. The historical equipment – authentic chainmail, helmets, surcoats, and horse armor – lends the performances particular credibility. Several groups from southern Germany travel to present these demonstrations.

Market, Crafts, and Camp Life

Around 100 market stalls feature craftspeople, merchants, and artists: blacksmiths, potters, woodturners, dyers, and leatherworkers demonstrate medieval techniques in action. In the extensive camp life area, visitors can experience how people lived, cooked, and worked in earlier times. Mead, spit-roasted meats, game goulash, and bread from a clay oven provide authentic sustenance.

Fire Shows and Parades

Every day at 2 p.m., all participants in historical costume take part in a grand parade through the castle – knights, minstrels, market vendors, dancers, and musicians. Highlights of the program are the fire shows on Friday and Saturday evenings, when the castle walls glow in dancing firelight. Minstrels with hurdy-gurdies, shawms, and drums accompany the events throughout the day.

Tittmoning – Medieval Town on the Salzach

The town of Tittmoning belongs to the district of Traunstein in the state of Bavaria and is located directly on the border river Salzach. The medieval town layout with its two city gates, the elongated market square, and the sturdy castle above the town is considered one of the most beautiful ensembles in the region. The castle, once the summer residence of the Archbishops of Salzburg and a border fortress, today houses the local history museum, art exhibitions, and the Historical Castle Days.

Family Program and Hands-on Activities

There is a special program for children: face painting in the castle courtyard, a children's tournament with specially made wooden swords, and a hand-cranked medieval carousel, which is a favorite attraction for young visitors. Archery for beginners, storytelling sessions, and hands-on craft activities round off the family offerings.

Castle Days Tittmoning — edition 2026

From August 14th to 16th, 2026, Tittmoning Castle will host its grand medieval spectacle. Knight fights, jousting, sword combat, fire shows on Friday and Saturday evenings, and a daily parade at 2 p.m. will shape the program. The market and camp, featuring craft demonstrations, food, and music, invite visitors to stay for hours. Children under 10 years old are admitted free.

The 2026 edition of the Historical Castle Days brings medieval life you can touch to the castle high above the Salzach. Three festival days open on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
