Traditional festival of the Kloster Oesede Marksmen's Association (Schützenverein) from 1660 — End of July 2026
The Kloster Oesede Marksmen's Association (Schützenverein) from 1660 looks back on more than 365 years of club history — a tradition that has older roots than the Diocese of Osnabrück in its current form. This makes the association one of the oldest marksmen's associations in the Osnabrück region and in southern Lower Saxony.
As tradition dictates, the marksmen's festival (Schützenfest) will take place on the last weekend of July 2026. The exact date will be confirmed by the association in spring 2026. The venue is the Schützenplatz in the Kloster Oesede district of the town of Georgsmarienhütte.
Kloster Oesede is one of the historic districts of Georgsmarienhütte — named after the former Benedictine convent, which was one of the most important convents in the Diocese of Osnabrück in the Middle Ages. Even though the convent no longer exists today, its history continues to shape the district.
As is customary for marksmen's festivals (Schützenfeste) in the Osnabrück region, the festival includes a clear traditional programme: bird shooting (Vogelschießen), shooting for the king (Königsausschießen), proclamation of the new royal couple, festive parade (Festumzug) through Kloster Oesede, king's banquet (Königsessen), dance evening with a live band, morning pint (Frühschoppen), and family day. Fanfare and marching bands accompany the events.
In a town like Georgsmarienhütte, which was formed from several historic districts, the marksmen's festival (Schützenfest) of individual districts is an essential part of its identity. With its marksmen's festival, Kloster Oesede fosters the annual gathering of the association family and the entire community — a highlight in the village calendar.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the association in spring. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years:
