Lörrach — Town on the High Rhine and Dreiländereck
With around 50,000 inhabitants, Lörrach is the district capital of the Lörrach district (state of Baden-Württemberg) in Germany's southernmost tip — right on the Swiss border (Riehen/Basel) and only a few kilometers from Alsace. Its location at the Dreiländereck (three-country corner) also shapes its Fasnacht: it is clearly Alemannic in character, with influences from the Basel Fasnacht and Alsatian Fasnacht culture.
2,900 Hästräger and 87 Walking Groups
The Great Fasnacht Parade is the centerpiece of Lörrach's street Fasnacht. On Fasnacht Sunday, February 15, 2026, starting at 1:30 PM, the procession will begin — with the following impressive statistics:
- Around 2,900 Hästräger (costumed participants in traditional Häs costumes)
- 18 music groups (Guggemusik bands, drum corps)
- 87 walking groups from Lörrach, Switzerland, and Alsace
- 16 floats with artistically designed themed constructions
The parade lasts about 2.5 hours. During the parade, the groups march through the city center — Marktplatz, Hauptstraße, Senserstraße — and shower spectators with traditional Fasnacht treats: candies, chocolates, pretzels, oranges, and occasionally small plush toys.
Swabian-Alemannic Fasnacht
The Lörrach Fasnacht is part of the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnacht tradition, which is significantly older and more original than the Rhenish Carnival. Typical figures at the Lörrach parade:
- Witches with long straw brooms and carved wooden masks
- Wild men in straw garments
- Devils with horned masks
- Guilds with historical Häs (traditional costumes)
Narrengilde Lörrach since 1903
The organizer is the Narrengilde Lörrach e.V., one of the oldest Fasnacht societies on the High Rhine (founded 1903) — over 120 years of Fasnacht history. The guild also organizes several other events during the Fasnacht season: Hexenball (Witches' Ball), Schmutzigen Dunschtig (Fat Thursday) with a town hall storming, Cliquen gatherings, and the subsequent Fasnacht burning on Ash Wednesday.
Continuing the Celebration in the City Center
After the parade, the Fasnacht festivities move to the pubs and clubhouses in the city center. The Lörrach Cliquen continue celebrating late into the night, with Guggemusik in the pubs and a lively atmosphere around the Marktplatz.
