One of Southern Baden's largest Fasnacht parades on Fasnacht Sunday — Narrengilde Lörrach since 1903
With around 50,000 inhabitants, Lörrach is the district capital of the Lörrach district (state of Baden-Württemberg) in Germany's southernmost tip — right on the Swiss border (Riehen/Basel) and only a few kilometers from Alsace. Its location at the Dreiländereck (three-country corner) also shapes its Fasnacht: it is clearly Alemannic in character, with influences from the Basel Fasnacht and Alsatian Fasnacht culture.
The Great Fasnacht Parade is the centerpiece of Lörrach's street Fasnacht. On Fasnacht Sunday, February 15, 2026, starting at 1:30 PM, the procession will begin — with the following impressive statistics:
The parade lasts about 2.5 hours. During the parade, the groups march through the city center — Marktplatz, Hauptstraße, Senserstraße — and shower spectators with traditional Fasnacht treats: candies, chocolates, pretzels, oranges, and occasionally small plush toys.
The Lörrach Fasnacht is part of the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnacht tradition, which is significantly older and more original than the Rhenish Carnival. Typical figures at the Lörrach parade:
The organizer is the Narrengilde Lörrach e.V., one of the oldest Fasnacht societies on the High Rhine (founded 1903) — over 120 years of Fasnacht history. The guild also organizes several other events during the Fasnacht season: Hexenball (Witches' Ball), Schmutzigen Dunschtig (Fat Thursday) with a town hall storming, Cliquen gatherings, and the subsequent Fasnacht burning on Ash Wednesday.
After the parade, the Fasnacht festivities move to the pubs and clubhouses in the city center. The Lörrach Cliquen continue celebrating late into the night, with Guggemusik in the pubs and a lively atmosphere around the Marktplatz.
On Fasnacht Sunday 2026 (February 15), the Narrengilde Lörrach opens the city center for one of the largest Alemannic parades in Southern Baden. Groups will assemble from 12:30 PM in the side streets, with the parade starting at 1:30 PM — the approximately 2,900 costumed participants, 18 music groups, 87 walking groups, and 16 floats will need about 2.5 hours to complete the parade route through the city center.
The exact route through Marktplatz, Hauptstraße, and Senserstraße will be published by the police and the Narrengilde in the days before the parade. After the parade, the Fasnacht festivities move to the city's pubs and Cliquen venues.
Free admission along the roadside. Evening pub parties usually require a small entrance fee from the respective Clique (approx. 5–10 EUR). Collecting treats is part of the tradition — bring bags.
You can reach Lörrach via the A 98 (exit Lörrach-Mitte or Lörrach-Ost). By train: Lörrach main station or Lörrach-Stetten station on the Wiesentalbahn (Basel SBB–Zell im Wiesental, S-Bahn S 5/S 6). It's only a 15-minute S-Bahn ride from Basel SBB. The city center is closed to traffic during the parade — traveling by train is recommended.
