Traditional Advent market at the Alter Marktplatz in the Dreiländereck
Lörrach is situated on the High Rhine, in the southwesternmost corner of Baden-Württemberg, in close proximity to Basel (Switzerland) and Saint-Louis (France). This location in the Dreiländereck (border triangle) shapes the town — many visitors to the Christmas market come from Switzerland and France, and the market is imbued with an international atmosphere.
The Lörrach Christmas Market takes place at the Alter Marktplatz and in the adjacent streets of the city center. Like many Southern German markets, it is designed as a multi-week event — in 2026, it traditionally runs around the second weekend of Advent from December 3rd to 13th (the second Advent in 2026 falls on December 6th). The city center is adorned with festive lights during the Advent season.
Lovingly decorated stalls offer regional handicrafts: woodwork, ceramics, glasswork, jewelry, textiles, and toys. Many exhibitors come from the Southern Black Forest, the Markgräflerland, and Switzerland. Bookstores and art and craft shops complement the offerings with gift ideas for the Advent season.
Culinary delights abound at the market: hot crêpes, candied almonds, chocolate-covered fruits, bratwurst, Maultaschen, and Schupfnudeln. In the Markgräflerland — the wine region around Lörrach — local mulled wines are served; non-alcoholic punch is also available. The Markgräflerland wine region is one of the northernmost wine-growing areas in Germany, and its mulled wines are a hallmark of the market.
Ensembles from the region perform several times during the market period: the Lörrach Music School with its students and youth orchestras, and the Mottettenchor Lörrach — one of the region's most traditional choirs — with Advent songs and polyphonic chants. In parallel, around six other smaller Advent markets take place in the districts of Lörrach — the weekend program is thus quite full.
St. Nicholas visits the market several times — children can read to him or sing songs and receive small gifts. A carousel with historical wooden horses is available for the little ones.
The Lörrach Christmas Market traditionally takes place around the second weekend of Advent. In 2026, the second Advent falls on December 6th — the market is expected to run from December 3rd to 13th, 2026 (compared to 2025, when it ran from December 4th to 14th).
The final market dates and exact opening hours will be announced from autumn 2026 onwards on loerrach.de and in the Lörrach press. The organizer is the Market Office of the City of Lörrach.
