A Natural Spectacle with Tradition
The Thusfest am Egerwasserfall is one of the most famous traditional events in the northern Fichtelgebirge. It takes place in the Thuswald forest northwest of Röslau in the Wunsiedel district of Bavaria – in one of the region's most impressive locations. The Thusfest has been celebrated annually on Whit Sunday with music and entertainment since 1928.
The Eger Waterfall – Only Once a Year
The eponymous Eger Waterfall plunges 28 meters deep into the riverbed filled with granite boulders. The special feature: the waterfall is not of natural origin, but the overflow of a millrace leading to the Thusmühle mill. As electricity is normally generated from the Eger's water power, only a small amount of water usually flows over the falls. Once a year, on Whit Sunday, the Eger is diverted back into its original bed for a few hours – then the waterfall unfolds its full, thundering power. This short window of time is precisely what makes the Thusfest so unique.
Local Festival in the Thuswald Forest
Around this natural spectacle, the people of Röslau celebrate their local festival: local clubs provide catering with Franconian specialties, accompanied by music and entertainment in the forest. Generations of families from the Fichtelgebirge associate childhood memories with the Thusfest – it is known throughout the Wunsiedel district.
Almost a Hundred Years of Tradition
With a history of almost a hundred years, the Thusfest is an authentic piece of Upper Franconian festival culture. It combines a rare natural spectacle with vibrant club life and makes the special landscape of the Egertal valley tangible. Anyone who wants to get to know the Fichtelgebirge from an unusual side should plan to be in the Thuswald forest on Whit Sunday.
