Spring festival with lilac tradition in the Drosa district
In the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district lies the municipality of Osternienburger Land — an administrative union of numerous small districts between Köthen and Dessau. One of these districts is Drosa, a village with just under 200 inhabitants, rural, quiet, with a strong connection to local customs. One of these customs is the Fliederfest (Lilac Festival), which is celebrated annually in May when the lilacs in the village are in full bloom.
The lilac is a traditional symbol of spring in many East German village communities — a sign that the cold season is definitively over and summer is beginning. The Drosa Lilac Festival picks up on this symbolism. It is not a large folk festival with carousels and showmen, but a small, very local celebration: live music in a marquee or outdoors, a farmers' market with local farm shops, coffee and cake, a dance event for the elders, and a few hands-on activities for children.
The program is deliberately manageable: starting at 2:30 PM on Sunday afternoon, a procession through the village, a joint welcome, then musical entertainment, market, and café atmosphere until the evening. It is precisely this compactness that makes it appealing — anyone who visits the Lilac Festival experiences an authentic piece of village tradition, far from any staging.
The Osternienburger Land belongs to Anhalt-Bitterfeld in Saxony-Anhalt — a scenically diverse region between Köthen (Bach town), Dessau (Bauhaus), and Bitterfeld. Mosigkauer Heide, Elbe floodplains, small streams, old village churches — this is the typical character. Those who visit the Lilac Festival can combine the day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site Bauhaus Dessau or a tour through Köthen.
Small, heartfelt, with tradition: The Fliederfest 2026 invites you to a spring celebration on Sunday afternoon in Drosa. Welcome by the local mayor, followed by live music and cozy get-togethers until the evening.
The exact artist program will be communicated by the municipality of Osternienburger Land before the event.
