One of the oldest village festivals in Saxony-Anhalt — over 160 editions in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld village of Wulfen
When a local festival celebrates its 163rd edition in the summer of 2025, it's clear: it's about more than just an ordinary summer party. The Kinder- und Heimatfest Wulfen is one of the most traditional village festivals in Saxony-Anhalt. Since the mid-19th century, the residents of Wulfen have met every year at the beginning of July to celebrate children, clubs, and the village community — and the date is as fixed in the local calendar as Christmas.
Wulfen is a district of the unified municipality of Osternienburger Land in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district. The village is located between Köthen and Dessau-Roßlau, in a landscape of fields, small forests, and ponds. With around 700 inhabitants, Wulfen is a classic Anhalt farming village — and it is all the more remarkable for a community of this size that the tradition of the local festival has been passed down unbroken for over 160 years.
The festival is organized by the Heimatverein Wulfen e.V. (Local Heritage Association), which, together with other local clubs, the fire department, and the community center Wulfen, manages the multi-day program. Damaschkestraße and the festival grounds are transformed into a small amusement park with fairy lights, a stage, and a Ferris wheel.
The program structure has been proven for decades: a festival parade through the village with children in traditional costumes, school, and club floats, followed by a torchlight procession on Saturday evening, winding through the village with lanterns. There are dance evenings in the festival barn, a disco for young people, a family afternoon with games and a children's carousel, and traditionally, a fireworks display to conclude. Food, bratwurst, and beer are served from the local clubs' own production.
The Kinder- und Heimatfest Wulfen is unpretentious, familial, and absolutely rural. It is one of those festivals in Saxony-Anhalt where you quickly become familiar with everyone over a beer at the stand — and the next morning, you're eating ham sandwiches with the same people at the morning pint. This is precisely why former residents return from Halle, Magdeburg, or Berlin after decades.
The 2026 edition follows the proven format of the Wulfen local festival: a long weekend full of activities for young and old, organized by the Heimatverein Wulfen e.V. and the local clubs. The festival grounds and Damaschkestraße become the meeting point for the village community and returning former residents.
Specific program details will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival — as usual, the festival parade, torchlight procession, dance evening, disco, children's program, and fireworks are expected to be part of the fixed schedule.
Program subject to change. Check heimatverein-wulfen.de and osternienburgerland.de for current detailed programs in good time.
