A day for all generations — weekly market, stage, and festival ensemble on the market square
The MarktFestSpiele was launched in 2025 by the city of Wunsiedel — as a one-day festival that brings together Wunsiedel's weekly market, market life, and festival culture in one event. The name plays on the tradition of the Luisenburg Festival Plays, Germany's oldest open-air theatre (since 1890), which attracts 200,000 spectators annually from June to August on the rocks above the city. The MarktFestSpiele bring a small part of this world directly into the city center.
During the day, the weekly market dominates the square — farmers and producers from the Fichtelgebirge, Oberpfalz, and the region. At lunchtime, "Lunch at the Market" invites you for a small meal at the seated area on the square. Several exhibition openings in the surrounding galleries and the town hall punctuate the day. A special touch: karaoke in the afternoon, consciously aimed at all generations — from children's songs to Schlager.
The artistic highlight: a performance by the Ensemble of the Luisenburg Festival Plays. The festival actors perform scenes from the current program or well-known works — directly on a mobile stage in the market square, free of charge. For Wunsiedel, this is a clever programmatic connection: the city's festival heritage is brought into city life once a year, accessible and open to everyone.
Wunsiedel is the district town of the Wunsiedel district in the Fichtelgebirge, in the extreme northeast of Bavaria, near the Czech border. Known are the Luisenburg with its rock labyrinth (one of the largest rock labyrinths in Europe) and the historic old town with the town hall, rebuilt in 1834. Wunsiedel is also the birthplace of the poet Jean Paul (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, 1763–1825). The MarktFestSpiele integrate these cultural traces of the place into a lively city festival day.
The second edition of the MarktFestSpiele builds on the successful premiere in 2025. The format remains: an all-day city festival on the market square, running from early morning (weekly market starts at 7:00 AM) until shortly before midnight, with different focuses depending on the time of day. Morning: weekly market atmosphere, Lunch: culinary program and family activities, Afternoon: culture (exhibitions, Luisenburg ensemble, karaoke), Evening: live music and city tour "Stadtlichter Wunsiedel".
The city tour "Stadtlichter Wunsiedel — Im Licht der Zeit" (8:00 PM–9:30 PM) leads through the illuminated night-time city center and relates to the city's history and Jean Paul's literary world.
Wunsiedel is located in the Fichtelgebirge in northeastern Bavaria. By car via the A93 (Hof–Regensburg, exit Marktredwitz) and the B303. By train via Marktredwitz and the Fichtelberg Railway to Wunsiedel. Parking in the city center is limited on event days — early arrival recommended.

For those who want to extend their stay: Luisenburg Rock Labyrinth (15 minutes on foot), Luisenburg Festival Plays (season June to August), Jean Paul Museum.
