Traditional festival in the Fichtelgebirge
The Volks- und Wiesenfest Wunsiedel is one of the historic festivals in Upper Franconia – an entire category of festivals that has its home in the Fichtelgebirge. Like the Selb Wiesenfest, the Hof Wiesenfest, or the Marktredwitz Volksfest, it dates back to a school tradition in the 19th century, where teachers and students would go "to the meadow" once a year to celebrate the end of the school year. These school processions evolved into today's festivals with parades, festival tents, and beer tapping. The tradition has been recognized as intangible cultural heritage in Bavaria since 2026.
The festival grounds are located at Burgermühlweiherplatz on the edge of the historic old town of Wunsiedel. A large festival tent, amusement rides for children and adults, classic festival stalls (shooting gallery, cotton candy, almonds, candied almonds, bratwurst stand), and a covered beer garden are set up on the square. The traditional festival tent will be supplied by a regional brewery from the Fichtelgebirge as usual – the festival program will be announced in good time by the Wunsiedel City Culture and Tourism Office at www.wunsiedel.de.
Wunsiedel, with around 9,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of Wunsiedel im Fichtelgebirge and is primarily known for the Luisenburg Festival – the oldest open-air theater in Germany. The Wiesenfest is part of the tradition of civic and school festivals and, alongside the Luisenburg Festival, is one of the most important social highlights of the year in the city. Those who want to combine the Wiesenfest with the festival can visit the Felsentheater (rock theater) at Luisenburg rock directly from Wunsiedel.
The Wunsiedel Wiesenfest is closely related to other festivals in the region (Selb, Schwarzenbach, Höchstädt, Röslau, Schirnding, Kirchenlamitz) – all in midsummer, all with a festival tent, beer tapping, and a parade. Those who want to experience a whole festival summer in the Fichtelgebirge will find suitable dates from spring to autumn.
The 2026 festival edition is confirmed in the official event calendar of the city of Wunsiedel with four days from July 3rd to 6th. The program will be published as usual at the beginning of June and follows the proven structure of Upper Franconian festivals: Friday evening opening with beer tapping, Saturday family day and festival evening, Sunday grand parade through the old town with clubs, traditional costume groups, and music bands from the train station to Burgermühlweiherplatz, Monday festival finale.
Local and regional brass and dance bands from the Fichtelgebirge and Vogtland play in the festival tent. The amusement rides cater to families (children's carousel, children's train) as well as teenagers (bumper cars, round rides). Wednesdays/family days with reduced prices are typical for festivals – the exact daily schedule is in the program.
The detailed program with brewery, festival host, and artists will be announced by the city of Wunsiedel in good time at www.wunsiedel.de.
