Open-air baptism on the church meadow in Bremen-Nord
Instead of in the church nave, the Open-Air Baptism Festival of the St. Magni parish takes place under the open sky – on the meadow directly next to the St. Magni Church in the green district of St. Magnus, one of the most beautiful corners of Bremen-Nord. People of all ages are welcomed into the global community of Christians and receive God's blessing for their lives.
The festival is intentionally warm and familial: After the baptismal service, families and guests gather for coffee and cake or a bring-along picnic, accompanied by cheerful music. This turns the baptism into a communal summer festival that extends far beyond the actual service.
The district of St. Magnus belongs to the Burglesum borough in the far north of Bremen, north of the Lesum river. Together with Lesum and Burgdamm, it forms the so-called Bremer Schweiz (Bremen Switzerland) – a landscape unusually hilly for North German standards, where the striking geest edge of the Wesermünder Geest runs. Villas from the Wilhelminian era, old parks, and lots of greenery characterize the scenery. The associated St. Magni Church, a listed building by Bremen architect Eberhard Gildemeister, was consecrated in 1967; its parish includes St. Magnus and Schönebeck, as well as some Lower Saxony towns on the outskirts. This quiet, almost rural environment makes the church meadow an atmospheric place for an outdoor baptism festival.
The baptism festival at St. Magni is part of a city-wide network: on the last weekend of May, several Bremen parishes invite to open-air baptism festivals at various locations – often directly by the water. Registration is possible for all festivals regardless of church membership, organized through the Evangelical Information Center Kapitel 8 at the Domsheide.
Open-air baptism festivals have gained significant importance in North Germany in recent years. They combine the Christian baptism tradition with the longing for community and nature and lower the threshold for families who wish to take this step in a relaxed atmosphere. Those who want to experience Bremen-Nord from its quiet, green side will find a particularly idyllic spot in the state of Bremen at the baptism festival in St. Magni.
