Streetfood, Afrobeats, Amapiano and Afro House – three days of African diaspora culture at Maaya in Friedrichshain
The African diaspora in Berlin is large, diverse, and culturally present – with its own restaurants, fashion designers, event organizers, and music labels. One of Berlin's most visible Afro labels is Afro Haus, which curates parties, street food events, and cultural formats. The Taste of Africa Festival is one of its flagship events: a festival that specifically combines cuisine, music, and encounters.
The main venue is Maaya on Revaler Straße 99 – an open-air and indoor area previously known as Haubentaucher. It is located in the RAW cluster (Friedrichshain, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district), one of Berlin's densest sub-cultural areas, where bars, clubs, a skate park, and open-air spaces have merged into a unique urban ecosystem. The location facilitates access for Berlin's weekend crowd and places the festival right in the middle of the city's nightlife scene.
Culinary-wise, the festival spans the entire continent: West African dishes (Jollof Rice, Suya, Egusi), North African street food classics (Tagine, Couscous, Brik), East African, and South African specialties complement each other. Several stalls offer finger food options, perfect for enjoying while standing and dancing during the DJ sets. Musically, the three major genres shaping today's pop diaspora scene dominate: Afrobeats (Nigeria, Ghana), Amapiano (South Africa), and Afro House (Angola, Mozambique, South Africa).
Visitors to the Taste of Africa Festival also get to know a Berlin scene that has grown significantly in recent years. Clubs like Kreuzberg's Yaam, festivals like the KeNaKo-Afrika-Festival, or diaspora formats like Panafrican Berlin or Afrikamera form the larger network, within which Taste of Africa represents a more culinary and music-focused highlight.
The 2026 edition of Taste of Africa spans three days at Maaya in Friedrichshain. The festival kicks off on Friday evening with the first DJ sets and food stalls; Saturday and Sunday are the main festival days with longer opening hours and a full range of stalls. Food zones, a bar, and a stage area are spread across the indoor and outdoor spaces of Maaya.
Culinary-wise, the festival covers the entire spectrum of African street food cultures: West African (Jollof Rice, Suya, Egusi Stew), North African (Tagine, Couscous, Brik), East African (Ugali, Mandazi), and South African (Boerewors, Bunny Chow, Pap). Musically, DJ sets alternate between Afrobeats (in the spirit of pop stars like Burna Boy and Rema), Amapiano (a South African house hybrid), and Afro House (Angola, Mozambique).
DJ lineup and food stall list will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on Afro Haus channels and via berlin.de.
