Medieval Christmas Market on the Friedrichshain Club Grounds
The RAW-Gelände on Revaler Straße in the Friedrichshain district (Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough) is usually synonymous with Berlin club culture, street art, and skaters. Six weeks before Christmas, the atmosphere shifts to a completely different era: torches instead of neon, hurdy-gurdy instead of techno, mead instead of Mate. Since 2016, organizer Carnica Spectaculi has been bringing its historical Christmas market to the grounds – filling a gap that Berlin's market canon had until then: a seriously staged medieval market in the middle of the city.
Instead of mass-produced gingerbread hearts, around 40 to 60 stalls showcase the crafts of long-forgotten guilds: potters, blacksmiths, woodcarvers, wool dyers. Instead of an electric carousel, a wooden carousel turns. Instead of Aperol Spritz, there's mead, hot hippocras, and mulled beer in clay mugs. The sparks of the "Flugträumer" fire show float above the grounds, while visitors young and old aim bows and arrows at straw-filled targets.
Carnica Spectaculi divides the six weeks into different focuses: storytellers on Mondays, fire shows on weekends, live music with historical instruments – hurdy-gurdy, shawm, frame drum. The market is closed on Totensonntag (Sunday of the Dead), a legally mandated day of silence in Berlin. Otherwise, the grounds are open daily, opening at noon on weekends.
Unlike most Berlin Christmas markets, the Historical Christmas charges a small admission fee – free on Mondays, otherwise between €3 and €4 per day or a flat rate of €15 for the entire season. The surcharge goes directly into the staging: for costumed extras, campfires, security personnel, and the fees for the craftspeople represented in the stalls' offerings. For a special Berlin experience and an event without mass tourism, this is a fair deal.
The tenth edition of the Historical Christmas is planned as a six-week season. The opening hours are clearly staggered: Monday to Thursday from 3 PM to 10 PM, Friday from 3 PM to 11 PM, Saturday and Sunday from 12 PM, and Saturdays also until 11 PM. The market is only closed on Totensonntag, November 22, 2026 – no such events take place in Berlin on this day of silence.
In terms of content, Carnica Spectaculi remains true to itself: potters, blacksmiths, wood and leather artisans at the stalls, mead, mulled wine, and mulled beer taverns, archery, crossbows, and a wooden carousel for children. The stage program alternates between fire shows, storytellers, and medieval music. Online reservation is not necessary; admission is paid on-site.
