Kerwe Triptych in the Kraichgau
The municipality of Mühlhausen in the Kraichgau (Rhein-Neckar district, Baden-Württemberg) celebrates not one Kerwe, but three — one per district. Tairnbach kicks things off on the third weekend of September, Rettigheim follows a week later, and Mühlhausen concludes the sequence in early October. The format is consistent: a street Kerwe, meaning no enclosed festival tent, but rather tables and benches set up on the street, with catering provided by local clubs and a Kerwe stage.
Around the Dreschhalle
The event's focal point in Tairnbach is the historic Dreschhalle — a former agricultural machinery hall from the first half of the 20th century, now a venue for municipal events. The surrounding streets are closed to traffic; club stands, catering, and small stages line the route.
Tairnbach — Kraichgau Winegrowing Tradition
With around 1,500 inhabitants, Tairnbach is the smallest of Mühlhausen's three districts, nestled among rolling vineyards. The Kraichgau is a traditional wine-growing region — consequently, wine plays an important role at the Kerwe. Local vintners have stands, and a glass of Riesling or Trollinger is as much a part of the Kerwe as the spit-roasted pork.
First in a Series
Visitors wishing to experience the full Kraichgau Kerwen season should plan for Tairnbach (3rd weekend of September), Rettigheim (4th weekend of September), and Mühlhausen (early October) as a three-part program. The Kerwe location changes each weekend, the clubs rotate, and the character remains true: Kraichgau street Kerwe, wine, bratwurst, and community catering.
