International Festival for Early Music in Regensburg's historic churches and halls at Pentecost
The Tage Alter Musik Regensburg have been held every Pentecost weekend since 1985 and are among the most renowned festivals for historical performance practice in the German-speaking world. Over four days, a dense program of matinees, afternoon and evening concerts, as well as late-night concerts unfolds. In 2026, the festival celebrates its 41st edition.
A characteristic feature is the use of the historic sacred buildings and halls of Regensburg's Old Town – itself part of the World Heritage. Venues include, among others:
A festival focus in 2026 is dedicated to the keyboard world of Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons in four one-hour concerts – performed by harpsichord and fortepiano specialists such as Pierre Gallon, Bertrand Cuiller, and Jermaine Sprosse. Additionally, there will be a reconstructed Passion oratorio (BWV Anh. 169) with the Belgian ensemble Il Gardellino.
The opening concert features the Regensburger Domspatzen (Regensburg Cathedral Choir) together with Musica Florea Prague. Other guests include Ensemble Irini, The Gonzaga Band, Oltremontano Antwerpen with the Tiburtina Ensemble, Les Épopées, the Verità Baroque Ensemble, and the acclaimed English vocal ensemble Stile Antico. The festival is complemented by concert introductions, an exhibition, and an international symposium in collaboration with the Institute of Musicology at the University of Regensburg.
The festival is supported by the City of Regensburg, Sparkasse Regensburg, the Free State of Bavaria, and a circle of friends and patrons with over 460 members. It is considered a cultural highlight of the Pentecost weekend in Eastern Bavaria.
The 2026 edition expands the program to 18 concerts. Four one-hour concerts are dedicated to the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons, performed by leading harpsichord and fortepiano specialists. Another Bach highlight is the reconstruction of a Passion oratorio (BWV Anh. 169) with the ensemble Il Gardellino.
The opening concert features the Regensburger Domspatzen with Musica Florea Prag (Weber's "Jubelmesse", Mendelssohn). The late-night concert "Paradisi Porte" by Oltremontano Antwerpen and the Tiburtina Ensemble brings Hans Memling's "Angels' Concert" to life. The closing concert is performed by the English vocal ensemble Stile Antico with "Polyphonic Postcards".
