Participatory neighbourhood festival with car-free streets around Rathenauplatz
The Tag des guten Lebens is a citizens' initiative from Cologne that has been organizing a car-free, participatory major festival in a different city district every year since 2013. The concept is radically simple yet revolutionary: For one Sunday, the streets of an entire neighbourhood are closed off — residents, clubs, initiatives, artists, educators, and businesses contribute with their own activities. Public space belongs to the people who use it daily for 24 hours.
After moving through Ehrenfeld, Sülz/Klettenberg, Deutz, and other districts, the Tag des guten Lebens moves to the Cologne city centre in 2026, specifically to the area around Rathenauplatz in the Innenstadt-Nord district. Date: Sunday, September 13, 2026.
The 2026 edition has a clear thematic focus: "Open space for children and young people". In a city with a chronic shortage of undeveloped space, play areas, and free social spaces for young people, the city centre is transformed into a large experimental area for one day. Partners include Blockparty Lindenstraße and Kidical Mass Köln.
The scale is impressive: Over 200 individual activities are prepared and carried out by the citizens' network — workshops, music, theatre, discussions, sports, art, performances, family picnics, children's competitions. The largest editions attracted up to 140,000 visitors.
The initiative is organised by the association Agora Köln e.V., an open network of Cologne citizens that has been practising bottom-up urban development since 2010. The Tag des guten Lebens is their flagship project. The participatory workshops for the 2026 edition begin in mid-May 2026 — interested citizens can get involved via [email protected].
The Innenstadt-Nord district encompasses parts of Altstadt-Nord and the Belgisches Viertel. With multi-generational households, young creatives, established art scenes, migrant communities, cafés, and boutiques, it is one of Cologne's most vibrant districts. Rathenauplatz, with its trees, fountain, and central location, is an urban living room — and in 2026, the heart of the Tag des guten Lebens.
After several editions in other districts, the 2026 edition moves to Innenstadt-Nord around Rathenauplatz. Citizen workshops begin in mid-May 2026 to collect suggestions and activities. Detailed programme points and activity list will be published in summer 2026 via tagdesgutenlebens.koeln and agorakoeln.de.
Note: As the festival programme is largely created bottom-up by citizen initiatives, the complete list of activities will be published shortly before September 13. Current information at tagdesgutenlebens.koeln and koelnagenda.de/veranstaltungen/tag-des-guten-lebens-2026.
