Open-air city festival of gamescom between Rudolfplatz, Hohenzollernring, and Friesenplatz from August 26–30, 2026
The gamescom city festival is the free, publicly accessible extension of gamescom, the world's largest gaming trade fair. While the trade fair at Koelnmesse Deutz gathers thousands of trade visitors and gamers, the city festival moves the gaming experience into Cologne's city center — and combines it with a high-quality music program.
The festival is spread along an axis from Rudolfplatz via the Hohenzollernring promenade to Friesenplatz. Several stages offer concerts focusing on indie, pop, and hip-hop. In between, there are gaming stations, streamer setups, cosplay meeting points, and, of course, a wide gastronomic selection — from street food trucks to pop-up bars.
Unlike the trade fair itself, the city festival is freely accessible. It appeals to gaming fans, music enthusiasts, families, and tourists alike — a conscious expansion of the gamescom audience to include people who don't buy tickets for the halls but want to be part of the gaming culture. Estimated visitor numbers: around 5,000 per day, several tens of thousands over the five days.
Cologne has been the home of gamescom since 2009, making it one of Europe's most important gaming cities. The city festival reinforces this status by bringing gaming culture from the exhibition grounds into the urban center — with Rudolfplatz and Hohenzollernring as central venues between the city center and the Belgian Quarter.
What makes the gamescom city festival unique: It transfers the gaming convention atmosphere into an urban setting. Cosplayers stroll along the stages, streamers broadcast live from temporary studios at Rudolfplatz, and indie developers present their games in pop-up showrooms. Visitors to the gamescom trade fair can seamlessly switch to the city festival in the evening — a gaming day that transitions smoothly from the exhibition hall setup to an open-air concert.
Anyone who wants to experience the full spectrum of the festival should ideally plan for a Thursday or Friday afternoon/evening — this is when the gaming scene is most strongly represented, but the crowds are not yet as large as on the weekend. Saturday evening features main stage shows with headliner acts. The Hohenzollernring axis between Rudolfplatz and Friesenplatz is one of Cologne's most beautiful pedestrian promenades — a worthwhile city walk even outside of the festival.
The 2026 edition runs from Wednesday (Aug 26) to Sunday (Aug 30) parallel to the main gamescom trade fair in Cologne-Deutz. Several stages along the Rudolfplatz–Hohenzollernring–Friesenplatz axis offer concerts, along with gaming stations and cosplay meeting points.
The exact lineup is traditionally published a few weeks before gamescom on gamescom.global. Those looking for culinary delights will find a wide selection of street food trucks and pop-up bars between the stages; the atmosphere is family-friendly, but becomes increasingly party-oriented towards the evening.
