Block-Party — a civic initiative since 2013
The Block-Party on Lindenstraße is not organised by a professional event company, but is a civic initiative: Residents from the Belgisches Viertel have been financing and running the festival themselves since 2013. 2026 marks the 13th edition. The unifying motto since the beginning: "We know each other. We help each other." — a conscious counter-model to the anonymous big city, a value system that originated in the neighbourhood and is repeatedly proven alive by the annual festival.
Programme — BBQ, Drinks, Live Music, Flea Market
The programme repertoire is classically neighbourly:
- BBQ with grilled meat and vegetarian/vegan alternatives
- Drinks and cocktails at the bar
- Cake stand with baked goods from residents
- Live music and DJ sets on stage
- Flea market with resident stalls
- Children's activities (games, crafts)
Proceeds for Charitable Causes
The special feature: All proceeds from drinks, tombola, cake stand, and stall fees are donated. Over the years, the initiative has passed on five-figure donation sums to charitable recipients in Cologne and internationally — social initiatives, NGOs, social projects in the neighbourhood (Veedel). The Block-Party is thus one of Cologne's most characteristic neighbourhood festivals.
Belgisches Viertel and Tag des guten Lebens 2026
The Belgisches Viertel is one of Cologne's most vibrant districts — located between the city centre and Aachener Weiher, with dense Wilhelminian-era buildings, diverse gastronomy, and an active café, bar, and boutique scene. The district has developed into one of Cologne's trendiest neighbourhoods over the past 20 years — which also brings with it debates about rent prices and gentrification. The Block-Party 2026 is held in cooperation with the Tag des guten Lebens 2026 — an initiative established in Cologne for years, which makes individual neighbourhoods car-free for a day and repurposes them for social, cultural, and ecological encounters.
Monthly Meetings and Mini Christmas Market
Beyond the annual main festival, the Block-Party initiative organises activities throughout the year: monthly regulars' tables (second Thursday at Restaurant Injera), spontaneous neighbourhood gatherings, a mini Christmas market in December. The next planning meeting is on 12 May 2026 — interested parties can contact [email protected].
