Sailing Festival in the Harbour
Sail Sassnitz is the maritime sailing festival of the harbour town on the Baltic Sea coast of Rügen Island. In August, ship bells traditionally ring in the harbour to announce the start of Sail Sassnitz. For several days, the harbour area becomes a festival mile for all age groups – a summer highlight that combines sailing tradition and folk festival.
Traditional Ships and Boat Trips
The focus is on the traditional sailing ships: historic two- and three-masted vessels that sail into the harbour and set their sails. Guests have the opportunity to go on board and take day trips into the Baltic Sea bay off Sassnitz. This close encounter with sailing makes the festival particularly appealing.
Culture and Gastronomy
In addition to the ships, Sail Sassnitz offers a diverse supporting programme: regattas on the water, a colourful cultural and stage programme on land, and gastronomic stalls with regional specialities. The festival is family-friendly and accessible free of charge in many viewing areas.
Sassnitz on the Chalk Coast
Sassnitz is located in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the gateway to the Jasmund National Park UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The chalk coast of the island forms the backdrop against which the sailing ships anchor. In 2026, Sail Sassnitz will partially coincide with the international sailing spectacle SailGP, which will take place off the coast of Sassnitz on August 22nd and 23rd – a double maritime highlight for the island.
