Cologne Christmas Market around the medieval Hahnentorburg
The Nikolausdorf is located at Rudolfplatz, one of the liveliest squares in Cologne's city center – at the transition from Schildergasse and Neumarkt to the hip Belgian Quarter. The central element of the backdrop is the Hahnentorburg, one of Cologne's three surviving medieval city gates, which has guarded the city's western exit since the 13th century. This combination of medieval architecture and modern district makes the market a special experience.
With a duration of almost six weeks (November 16 to December 23), the Nikolausdorf is one of the longer-running Cologne Christmas markets. Closed on November 22 (Volkstrauertag - National Day of Mourning). On the final day, December 23, the market ends at 9 PM.
On the stage directly in front of the Hahnentorburg, a live program with Cologne artists takes place daily starting at 6 PM – bands, solo acts, choirs. The mix ranges from local music (from Bläck Fööss to Kasalla cover bands) to acoustic pop and classic Advent choirs. Program schedule at nikolausdorf.com.
A central element is St. Nicholas, who walks through the lanes daily (except on Volkstrauertag) between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM. Children receive small gifts, and parents have photo opportunities. The market is fully accessible – with modern toilet facilities and a changing table, a quality not always found at Cologne Christmas markets.
Every Wednesday from 5 PM to 9 PM, Radio Köln broadcasts from a glass studio in the middle of the market – a format that closely integrates the Nikolausdorf with the local media landscape. Listeners can view the studio directly from the outside, and there are always guests and live interviews.
Cologne, with over 1.1 million inhabitants, is the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the seat of the Archbishopric. The city has established seven major Christmas markets: at the Cathedral, at Alter Markt (Heinzelmännchen), at Neumarkt (Engelchen), at the Chocolate Museum (Hafen), in the Old Town (Heumarkt), at Stadtgarten (Hexenhäuschen), and the Nikolausdorf at Rudolfplatz. A Köln-Card or the KVB's Christmas Market Ticket makes it easier to tour between the markets.
The 2026 edition runs for 38 net days (closed on Volkstrauertag) and concentrates the Advent program around the Hahnentorburg. The organizer is Nikolausdorf GmbH, managed by Rico von der Gathen.
