Rural family festival in Bremen's marshland
The Blockland is one of Bremen's last rural corners - a vast, flat marshland with ditches, farms, and plenty of nature in the north of the city. With around 3,000 hectares, it is the largest contiguous agricultural area in the state of Bremen, nestled in the Wümme lowlands between the Wümme and Lesum rivers. It is here that the Blockland village community invites you once a year to the Kinderfest on the grounds of the village community center in Niederblockland. For families from Bremen, it is an excursion into the countryside, and for the children, a day full of adventure far from concrete and traffic.
The program is tailored entirely to the little ones: rides on vintage tractors, pony rides, a bouncy castle, face painting, duck fishing, and a carousel. Children can dig and build in the sandpit, and walk on water in large balls. A large tombola with over a thousand tickets adds extra excitement - and brings smiles to faces when a prize is drawn. Food and drinks are provided, making the visit a relaxing day trip for the whole family.
What's special about the Kinderfest im Blockland: almost all attractions are free of charge. Numerous sponsors from the region make it possible for children to enjoy the day to the fullest without their pocket money suffering. This makes the festival an unburdened family day for young and old, where the focus is not on the wallet, but on shared experiences.
The Blockland was first mentioned in documents as early as 1235; the wet marsh was cultivated from the 12th century by Dutch settlers, whose work gave the neighboring landscape the name Hollerland. Ditches, dikes, and drainage systems characterize the landscape to this day, and in summer, even trips on traditional peat barges are possible. Supported by the Dorfgemeinschaft Blockland e.V., the Kinderfest is an expression of vibrant village life right on the doorstep of the Hanseatic city. It brings together neighbors, families, and visitors from all over Bremen and makes the rural heritage of this special district tangibly accessible.
