Tip
Come after dark (from approx. 5 PM) — the angel staging is most effective then. Combine with Cologne's other Christmas markets for a tour: Neumarkt → Heumarkt → Markt am Dom → Heinzelmarkt, which is about a 1.5 km walk in total. Mulled wine mugs can be kept for a deposit, a nice collection for collectors. Come on weekdays, weekends are very crowded.
Angels Above Neumarkt
The Markt der Engel at Neumarkt in Cologne is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric Christmas markets in Germany. The concept is clear: angels are the recurring motif — as white sculptures floating above the market, as costumed performers walking through the stalls and handing out small gifts, as a decorative element on every second stall. This distinguishes the market from other Cologne Christmas markets (Heinzelmarkt, Markt am Dom, etc.) through its uniform thematic staging. It opens its gates from November 16 to December 23, 2026.
Atmosphere and Setting
Angel Staging
The market's signature feature: white angel sculptures floating between the wooden stalls or placed on high pillars. Illuminated from within after dark, they create an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Costumed angel performers wander through the market — women in white robes with wings, often with small gingerbread gifts for visitors.
Wooden Stalls and Decoration
Over 80 brightly decorated wooden stalls line the spacious Neumarkt square. Each stall is adorned with fairy lights, fir branches, and individual angel decorations. The illumination above the market is one of Cologne's most beautiful light installations — a magical sight when photographed from above.
Exhibitors and Assortment
Arts and Crafts
The selection of exhibitors is carefully curated: wood carvings from the Erzgebirge region (incense smokers, candle arches, nativity figures), glass art, jewelry workshops, Christmas baubles from Lauscha, leather goods, felt crafts, candles in every shape and size. Many exhibitors have been associated with the market for years.

Cologne's Christmas Market Landscape
Cologne has seven major Christmas markets, each with its own theme. The Markt am Dom is the most famous, the Heinzelmarkt at Alter Markt the most traditional. The Markt der Engel at Neumarkt is the most atmospheric — and one of the largest in a central location. The Hafenweihnachtsmarkt (Harbor Christmas Market) at the Chocolate Museum, the Heimat der Heinzel at Alter Markt, and the Stadtgarten Christmas Market complete the offerings. A mulled wine tour between the markets is one of the most beautiful Advent season activities in the city — all markets are within walking distance of each other.
Neumarkt as a Christmas Stage
The Neumarkt is one of the central squares in Cologne's city center, located between Rudolfplatz and Schildergasse. With a length of about 200 meters and a width of 50 meters, it offers ample space for a large Christmas market. With its subway connection (lines 1, 7, 12, 15, 16, 18), it is perfectly accessible — one of Cologne's busiest subway hubs.
