The Evening
From 5 PM to 10 PM, the Satow church ruin transforms into an autumnal festival ground centred around the potato. Regional recipes featuring the tuber as the main ingredient are served. In the light of lanterns and fire bowls, the ancient walls appear particularly atmospheric.
Character
The Tüffelfest is designed as a cosy evening without a major stage programme — socialising, good food, and autumn atmosphere are the focus. The organiser is the association Lebendige Steine – Kirchruine Satow e.V.

The Potato Takes Centre Stage
The Tüffelfest at the Satow church ruin is an autumn potato festival in the Low German tradition. After the harvest, the association Lebendige Steine puts the "Tüffel" — as the potato is called in Low German — at the heart of a culinary evening. Regional recipes featuring the tuber are served, from hearty stews to savoury side dishes. Potato festivals have a long tradition in Northern Germany: after the harvest, they celebrate the staple food that has graced the region's tables for centuries.
Autumn Atmosphere within Ancient Walls
The charm of the Tüffelfest lies in its setting. It takes place in the evening, when the ancient walls of the early Gothic church ruin appear particularly atmospheric in the light of lanterns and fire bowls. The Satow church is one of Mecklenburg's oldest church buildings — the construction of a church at this site by Cistercian monks was documented in 1224. Today, only the ruin remains, its former cemetery now a park-like area, providing an ideal backdrop for festivals.
Community and Gathering
The Tüffelfest is deliberately designed as a cosy evening: no grand programme, but good food, socialising, and togetherness in an autumnal atmosphere. The association Lebendige Steine – Kirchruine Satow e.V., founded in 2011, sees such festivals as part of its mission to bring the ruin back to life and make its 800-year history tangible.
Satow in the Rostock District
Satow is located in the Rostock district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, easily accessible between the Hanseatic city of Rostock and the Baltic Sea coast. The church ruin in the village centre is the venue for concerts, readings, film nights, and seasonal festivals throughout the year — the Tüffelfest traditionally concludes the warm event season.
