Spring plant market at the historic church ruin in the Rostock district
The plant market at the Satow church ruin is not a commercial garden market, but a community spring gathering. In the park around the historic ruin, hobby gardeners display their home-grown seedlings, perennials, herbs, and garden rarities. What's left over from their own gardens is swapped, given away, or sold for a small fee. Those new to gardening will find an easy entry point here; experienced gardeners are happy to share their knowledge.
The old Satow church is one of the oldest church buildings in Mecklenburg – as early as 1224, the Mecklenburg charter book records the construction of a church by Cistercian monks at this site. For centuries, it was the spiritual and cultural center of the village. Today, only the early Gothic ruin remains, but the former cemetery around it has taken on a park-like character through leveling and planting – an ideal setting for events like the plant market.
Behind the market is the association 'Lebendige Steine – Kirchruine Satow e.V.', founded on March 14, 2011. Its goal: to bring the ruin back to life and make the 800-year history of the place tangible. Throughout the year, the association organizes concerts, readings, film nights, and seasonal festivals – the plant market in May traditionally opens the spring season. Satow is located in the Rostock district, easily accessible between the Hanseatic city of Rostock and the Baltic coast, in the heart of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
In addition to plant swapping, the market features creative activities and social interaction in an idyllic ruin setting. The association consciously understands the morning as a low-threshold format: free admission, everyone can bring something or simply browse. The atmosphere between the old walls, the greenery of the park, and the plant stalls makes this event a firm spring ritual in the region.
From 10 AM to 3 PM, the park around the Satow church ruin transforms into a vibrant plant market. Hobby gardeners bring their home-grown seedlings, perennials, herbs, and garden rarities. What's left over from their own gardens is swapped or given away for a small fee – from robust perennial classics to rare plant varieties.
In addition to plant swapping, the association offers creative activities related to gardening and nature. The historic ruin setting and the park-like former churchyard give the market its special character.
