Franconian Kirchweih of the sports club SpVgg Dürrbrunn-Unterleinleiter
In Upper Franconia, a Kirwa is rarely just a religious event – clubs often host the festival. In Unterleinleiter, it has been the SpVgg Dürrbrunn-Unterleinleiter, the local sports club of the combined villages of Dürrbrunn and Unterleinleiter, that has been organizing the Kirchweih for years. From July 3rd to 6th, 2026, the club invites you to the traditional Kirwa at its clubhouse and sports field.
The festive opening takes place on Friday, July 3rd, at 5:30 PM with an ecumenical service – a detail that connects Kirwa tradition with modern ecumenical practice and symbolically brings together the entire village, both Protestant and Catholic. The actual festival weekend then begins: three days of festival tent, Franconian specialties, Kirwa dances, and conviviality.
Unterleinleiter is located in the district of Forchheim on the western edge of Franconian Switzerland, one of Germany's most beautiful low mountain ranges. Bizarre rock formations, dripstone caves, small castles, medieval market towns: the region is a popular hiking area and, at the same time, a dense network of villages where traditional club life is particularly pronounced. The Kirwa of Unterleinleiter is an example of this.
It is not unusual for a sports club to organize the Kirwa. SpVgg clubs in Upper Franconia often take over the festival culture of their communities – they have clubhouses, sports fields, and volunteer structures. The mix of sport and traditional Kirwa culture is part of the Franconian club identity. Club members handle the catering, and the proceeds go towards supporting club operations.
The 2026 edition of the Kirchweih Unterleinleiter follows the classic four-day format of the Upper Franconian club Kirwa. It opens on Friday with the ecumenical service at 5:30 PM, which also serves as the official Kirchweih kickoff. Afterward, the SpVgg Dürrbrunn-Unterleinleiter takes charge: three days of festival tent, dance music, and Franconian specialties.
Catering is provided by club members, and the proceeds go towards supporting the SpVgg's sporting activities. The festival program follows the standard Franconian Kirwa format: a grand festival evening on Saturday, a festive Sunday with a morning pint and Kirwa dances, and a family day and closing on Monday.
