Dancing in the Heart of the City

Swing in the City is an unusual open-air dance series organised by the independent city of Augsburg in the Bavarian state of Bavaria. On several summer dates, Königsplatz — Augsburg's central transport hub with tram stops, fountains, and shops — transforms into an open-air dance floor, where participants swing dance under the guidance of the Hep Cat Club. The area between the fountains and the buildings along Bahnhofstraße is marked with small signs; participation is completely free and possible without prior experience.

Hep Cat Club and Augsburg Marketing

The series is jointly organised by Augsburg Marketing and the Hep Cat Club, Augsburg's swing dance school located at Viktoriastraße 3b. The Hep Cat Club is considered one of the most renowned swing schools in Southern Germany and is known far beyond Bavaria for its Lindy Hop courses, Balboa & Shag events, and the annual Augsburg Balboa & Shag Festival. At »Swing in the City«, the dancers bring their expertise to the public space and dance together with everyone interested.

For All Levels, No Registration Required

Participation is free and possible without prior registration; however, registering via the Hep Cat Club website is recommended so that organisers can inform participants about a possible relocation to the studio in case of bad weather. You don't need to bring a dance partner — those who come alone will find others to dance with on the floor. Comfortable, movement-friendly clothing and something to drink are recommended.

Part of the Augsburg City Summer

The series is embedded in the Augsburg City Summer — a series of open-air cultural events that shape the summer life in one of Germany's oldest cities. With »Swing in the City«, the city emphasises communal, accessible dancing in public spaces: no grandstands, no ticket office, just dance culture for everyone. In case of bad weather, the dance classes will move to the Hep Cat Club's studio.
