Four days of beach, sports, and live music in the heart of Limburg's old town
The Summer Games Limburg are what many small German towns would wish for as a summer highlight: a four-day family festival in the middle of the historic old town, with a beach atmosphere, live music, sports, and full catering – and this has been the case since 2004. In the summer of 2026, the 21st edition will take place, directly after the 20th-anniversary celebration in 2025, which marked a peak in the event's history.
The centerpiece is the Neumarkt, which is transformed into a beach landscape every year in early August: almost 500 tons of sand, palm trees, a beach bar, loungers, and volleyball courts create a Caribbean atmosphere against a medieval half-timbered backdrop. The festival extends beyond the Neumarkt into the entire city center – Limburg's old town with its narrow alleys, the cathedral, and the Lahn bridge becomes a playground for four days.
Limburg is the district town of Limburg-Weilburg, located on the Lahn river halfway between Frankfurt and Cologne. With around 34,000 inhabitants and one of Germany's best-preserved half-timbered old towns – plus the striking Limburger Dom (Limburg Cathedral) – the city is a consistently attractive destination. The Summer Games work so well partly because the city center is small enough for the festival to be experienced collectively.
Unlike purely city festivals, sports at the Summer Games are not an afterthought but a distinct program strand. Over the four days, competitions and tournaments in numerous disciplines take place – dragon boat races on the Lahn, table football championships, beach volleyball, beach soccer. Clubs and individuals can register in advance, and results are published on the event website. Saturday, August 8th, 2026, is designated as the "Day of Sports.".
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, bands play on the central stage at the Neumarkt. Stylistically diverse, ranging from cover pop and indie to Schlager. The concept originated in the founding phase in 2004 and has been the festival's foundation ever since: beach and sports during the day, concerts in the evening, with catering provided by local restaurateurs in between.
