Christmas market in the illuminated princely castle with nativity scene exhibition
The Hadamar Castle Christmas is one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in Central Hesse. On the first two Advent weekends (November 27–29 and December 4–6, 2026), the illuminated Princely Castle of Hadamar opens its courtyards to visitors from all over the region.
Unlike big city Christmas markets, Hadamar focuses on 16 club stalls offering culinary specialties and traditional crafts. Hadamar citizens sell mulled wine, bratwurst, crêpes, cookies, and handmade gifts – proceeds go to the club treasuries.
Local choirs, brass ensembles, dance groups, and clubs perform on the castle stage. The official opening is on Friday evening of each weekend with a festive start.
A special attraction during the Castle Christmas is the Hadamar Nativity Scene Exhibition, which opens concurrently. With over 7 rooms and 400 cribs from around the world, it is one of the largest nativity scene exhibitions in Germany. Admission to the nativity scene exhibition is free.
The Princely Castle of Hadamar is a four-wing complex from the 17th century and was the residence of the Princes of Nassau-Hadamar. Today, it houses, among other things, the Hadamar Glass Museum and city rooms. During the Advent season, the entire castle complex is atmospherically illuminated.
Hadamar is a small town with around 12,000 inhabitants in the Limburg-Weilburg district, known for its glass art and Baroque architecture. The historic old town with the castle forms the backdrop for the Castle Christmas.
The Hadamar Nativity Scene Exhibition displays over 400 cribs from around the world in 7 rooms – from Peruvian shepherd scenes to Russian ice cribs. Admission is free. The exhibition has extended opening hours throughout the year until mid-January and is one of the most important nativity scene museums in Germany. Combined with the Castle Christmas, it offers the ideal combination: market outside, nativity scene exhibition inside.
The Castle Christmas opens on two Advent weekends in the Princely Castle of Hadamar. The official opening takes place on the Friday evening of the first weekend. The nativity scene exhibition opens concurrently in the surrounding rooms.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and crafts at club stalls at usual market prices. Admission to the nativity scene exhibition is also free.
By car: A3 Frankfurt–Cologne, exit Limburg-Nord, then B54 towards Hadamar (10 min.). By train: Hadamar station (RB line Limburg–Au), 10 min. walk to the castle.
Fridays 4:30 PM–9:30 PM, Saturdays 3:30 PM–9:30 PM, Sundays 2:00 PM–8:00 PM (based on previous years). Official opening on Friday evening of the first weekend.
Combine the Castle Christmas and the Nativity Scene Exhibition – they belong together and are just a few steps apart. The early evening hours are the most atmospheric when the illumination begins.
