Advent magic at the foot of the Limburg Cathedral
Limburg an der Lahn is one of the most beautiful half-timbered towns in Hesse. The old town lies picturesquely above the Lahn river and is overlooked by the 13th-century Limburg Cathedral with its seven towers, one of the most significant late Romanesque structures in Germany. It is precisely in this setting that the Limburger Christkindlmarkt unfolds on Advent weekends – not a single market square, but a market village spread across several locations.
Unlike most German Christmas markets, the Limburger Christkindlmarkt is not concentrated on a single square but is spread across Kornmarkt, Neumarkt, Plötze, and the upper part of Bahnhofstraße. This urban planning feature makes the stroll from one square to the next part of the experience: narrow old town alleys, illuminated half-timbered facades, and constantly recurring views of the cathedral on its rocky spur above the Lahn.
A total of around 27 stalls offer a deliberately manageable selection: regional arts and crafts, traditional Christmas pastries, gingerbread, mulled wine varieties – including specialties from Bergstraße vintners – as well as warm food from potato pancakes and bratwurst to sweet crêpes. At Neumarkt and Kornmarkt, a children's carousel and lovingly arranged nativity scenes complement the program for families.
The musical heart is the small stage at Kornmarkt. Almost daily between 4 and 5 PM, various choirs, vocal ensembles, and soloists perform songs ranging from traditional Christmas classics to modern arrangements. School choirs from Limburg schools, brass choirs from the cathedral parish, and gospel choirs from the region form the regular cast of the stage program.
The Christkindlmarkt is part of Limburger Weihnacht, a city-wide umbrella event that combines concerts (also in the cathedral), church services, and special Advent readings. Visitors should take time to look inside the cathedral – the Advent lighting and concerts during the Advent season are among the most atmospheric experiences in Central Hesse.
The 2026 edition will open on Friday, November 27, with a ceremonial act on Bischofsplatz in front of the cathedral. As in previous years, the Limburg Police Band and members of the male vocal ensemble “Camerata Musica” will accompany the opening. The market will then run daily until December 22.
Free admission. Food and drinks at stalls at market prices.
