52nd Edition – three days of city festival in the alleys around Limburg Cathedral
The Altstadtfest Limburg is one of the most traditional city festivals in Hesse. Since 1975, the city has gathered on the last weekend of June in the medieval old town for three days of music, culinary experiences, and encounters. 2026 marks the 52nd edition – an anniversary that a city festival in Germany rarely achieves and that documents the format's deep roots in Limburg's identity.
The venue is the historic Old Town of Limburg, considered one of the best-preserved medieval townscapes in Germany. Over 600 half-timbered houses stand close together around the Limburg Cathedral St. Georg, whose seven towers visibly dominate the city from afar. The alleys are narrow, the squares are small – and that's precisely what creates the atmosphere. Anyone strolling through the Altstadtfest is literally walking through an 800-year-old urban fabric.
The programmatic backbone consists of the four stages plus two additional squares spread throughout the old town: traditionally the main stage at Bischofsplatz, a stage at the Fischmarkt, one at the Kornmarkt, and a fourth at the Plötze. Additionally, other squares and courtyards will be used – with walking acts, a silent disco, chill-out zones, and a special children's area. This distribution ensures that visitors flow through the old town and don't concentrate in one spot – a dramaturgical concept that makes Limburg one of the best-organized city festivals in Hesse.
Programmatically, the Altstadtfest focuses on regional bands, newcomers, and crowd favorites. Acts known from previous editions include unArt, Beakers Mom, Ladykiller, Ichy Toe, The Torais, Mirko Santocono, and D's Harmony. In addition, DJ Mr. Black will perform on the dance stage, along with dance schools, fitness studios, and ballet academies from Limburg presenting their own programs. The exact band lineup for 2026 will be published on the festival website a few weeks before the event.
A special feature of the Limburg Altstadtfest is the walking acts: artists like Clown Rudi roam the alleys, creating unexpected encounters off the stages. There is also a children's area with interactive activities and a silent disco, which allows for a quiet dance floor in the historic old town using headphones.
Limburg clubs and restaurateurs will treat their guests to classic Hessian Volksfest cuisine – Bratwurst, Reibekuchen, Handkäs' mit Musik – and a surprisingly international range. Limburg's old town has been a gastronomic hotspot in the region for years, with excellent restaurants in historic buildings. During the Altstadtfest, many of these open external stations, turning the festival stroll into a culinary tour.
Limburg an der Lahn is the district capital of Limburg-Weilburg, strategically located between Frankfurt and Cologne on the A3 motorway and the ICE high-speed rail line. The city, with its approximately 35,000 inhabitants, thrives on a mix of tourism, trade, and administration. The Altstadtfest is one of the formats with which Limburg expands its tourist appeal beyond the cathedral – and with which the city regularly lands in the top 10 lists of Germany's most beautiful old town festivals.
The 52nd edition follows the established three-day format of the Altstadtfest. The organizer is Martin Horne Veranstaltungsorganisation in cooperation with the City of Limburg. The Limburger Altstadtkreis e.V. coordinates the participation of local clubs. The detailed band list for 2026 will be published in May/June via the official festival website.
