12th edition at the Renaissance Castle Hadamar in the Westerwald – with 49 stalls, 15 encampments, knights, and bagpipe music
Hadamar Castle is a Renaissance castle in the Westerwald district (North Hesse-Middle Hesse), originally built in the 17th century for the Princes of Nassau-Hadamar. Today, it houses administration and event spaces and, with its walls, courtyards, and the nearby Elbbach river, offers an unusually authentic backdrop for medieval markets. It is precisely here that the event company Lorraine Médiévale has been organizing its popular market for over a decade.
The 12th edition on July 11th and 12th, 2026, features 49 market stalls and 15 encampments spread across the castle grounds and along the Elbbach river. Merchants, leatherworkers, blacksmiths, woodcarvers, potters, jewelers, herbalists, and weapons masters form a dense market network through which one can stroll for hours. Taverns, bread bakers, spit-roast vendors, and vegetarian stalls cater to culinary delights.
The Czech knight group Haritgo provides the martial centerpiece: staged combat with swords, battle axes, and morning stars several times daily. Musically, Capud Draconis (bagpipes and drums) ensures the spectacular market acoustics, complemented by the dance trio Angerspiel and the harpist Jonny Robles. The juggler Timelino and fire artist Frouwen Lena deliver the nighttime show, while the Dutch theater group El Capstok performs with the mystical being of Saefthinge. Storyteller Stella Monte engages the children.
A complete family program awaits the children: archery, dragon hunting, a wheel of fortune, a carousel, and a face-painting booth. Those who come in costume pay only half the admission price – a deliberate incentive to keep the medieval image alive.
Behind the market is Lorraine Médiévale, a German-Lorraine event company that operates medieval markets between Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Lorraine. Hadamar is one of their oldest and most popular formats.
