Schloss Strünkede — Moated Castle in the Heart of the Ruhr Area
Located in the middle of Herne, nestled in a historic park and surrounded by a medieval moat, stands the Schloss Strünkede. First documented in 1142 as the seat of the noble lords of Strünkede, it is now one of the few surviving aristocratic residences in the northern Ruhr area — and houses the Emschertal Museum, which documents regional history from the Bronze Age to industrialization. In December, the park around the castle transforms into a medieval Advent world: Medieval Advent Schloss Strünkede — affectionately called "Strünkeder Advent" by many Herne residents.
2026 — Four Weekends Instead of Three
The big change in 2026: The Medieval Advent will, for the first time, run on all four Advent weekends — the previous limitation to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Advent is thus removed. This expansion is a response to the continuous influx of visitors: in 2025 alone, the market attracted tens of thousands of visitors from across the Ruhr area and beyond.
Around 40 Craft and Market Stalls
Entering the palace park transports you to another era: blacksmiths at the anvil, leatherworkers with handmade purses, potters with rustic ceramics, candlemakers, spinners at the wheel, bow makers, jewelry makers with bronze and silver. Alongside these, stalls offering mead, mulled wine, stick bread, wild boar sausages, stews from cast-iron pots — all heated by wood fires, all without kitschy fairy lights, all as authentic as possible.
Living Nativity Scene, Jesters, Fire-Eaters
The program in the palace park is packed: A living nativity scene tells the Christmas story with real animals, jester troupes juggle with burning torches, fire-eaters perform in the evening, storytellers gather children around the campfire, a historic carousel spins its rounds. As dusk falls, the highlight begins: the illuminated castle — its facade bathed in warm yellow-orange light, reflected in the dark water of the moat. A sight that justifies every smartphone photo.
Opening Hours and Admission
The market is open Thursday and Friday 4:00 PM–10:00 PM, Saturday 12:00 PM–10:00 PM, and Sunday 12:00 PM–7:00 PM. Admission prices vary by day: Thursday €3 (children €2), Friday to Sunday €6 (children €3). So, if you want to experience the market affordably, come on Thursday evening.
Emschertal Museum — The Permanent Treasure
During the market weekends, the Emschertal Museum, located at Schloss Strünkede, is also open — often with thematic special tours that historically contextualize the Middle Ages in the Ruhr area. Those visiting with children also have the opportunity to explore the castle's archaeological collections and historic rooms before or after their market stroll.
Getting There and Practical Information
Public transport is the best option: Subway line U35, bus lines SB 20 and 362 stop directly at "Schloss Strünkede". By car: A 42 exit Herne-Baukau, then follow signs. Parking is limited in the surrounding area; on busy weekends, using public transport is strongly recommended.
