Winter Market in the Historic Freight Building
From 1948 to 2020, Tegel Airport was one of Berlin's central airports — built during the airlift, expanded during the division, and for a long time the main airport for West Berlin and later for all of Berlin. Since its final closure in 2020, the area is being redeveloped into "Berlin TXL — The Urban Tech Republic," a research and industrial park. Until this major project is completed, individual buildings are being used temporarily — including the Old Freight Canteen, a long, functional building at the former freight handling area.
What the Market Offers
The format is small and curated: gift stalls, Christmas treats, live music on the Freight Canteen stage. Compared to the large Christmas markets in Berlin's city center, the appeal here is different — the nostalgic atmosphere of the former airport, which is closely linked to personal memories for many Berliners. Visitors to the winter market combine Advent cheer with a visit to a historically significant place.
Tegel, Reinickendorf, and the TXL Area
The Tegel district in Reinickendorf is located in the northwest of Berlin and is well-connected by U-Bahn and S-Bahn. The former airport site is Berlin's largest contiguous redevelopment project and, through temporary use, hosts film sets, smaller events, and creative interim uses. The winter market is part of this transitional program.
Winter Market TXL — edition 2026
The format was first tested in 2025 — opening edition on November 29/30, 2025. A repeat in 2026 is still under discussion according to the organizer and Berlin.de as of early 2026. Once confirmed, the date and opening hours will be announced on berlin.de and via local Reinickendorf media.

The Winter Market at the former Tegel Airport TXL is expected to take place in 2026 on the 1st Advent weekend (November 28/29, 2026) in the Old Freight Canteen, Flughafen Tegel 1, 13405 Berlin-Reinickendorf. The organizer has not yet communicated any fixed dates for 2026 — according to Berlin.de as of: "It is not yet known whether the market will take place again in 2026." Admission: Donation.
