Organ music festival in the historic churches of the Hanseatic city
Hardly any other city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern boasts such a dense collection of important organs as the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. The three major brick churches in the old town – St. Nikolai, St. Jakobi, and St. Marien – house instruments of renown, whose history dates back to the Baroque period. From this abundance, the concept of "Organ City Stralsund" emerged, which has been dedicated to the preservation and communication of this heritage since 2002. The Stralsund Organ Days are the festival where this sonic treasure becomes audible to a broad audience.
Spread over a week, the festival offers a diverse program of around sixteen concerts and events. The focus is on classical organ concerts with renowned organists, supplemented by free improvisations that explore the sonic potential of the instruments.
The high Gothic church interiors of Stralsund's old town create an extraordinary acoustic and a festive, yet approachable atmosphere. Visitors to the Organ Days experience not only music but also a piece of Hanseatic history – the mighty brick churches have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage along with Wismar since 2002.
Stralsund is located on the Strelasund opposite the island of Rügen and is the district town in the Vorpommern-Rügen district. The Organ Days are integrated into a varied cultural calendar and are an invitation to get to know the Hanseatic city from its musical side in early autumn.
The 4th Stralsund Organ Days will take place from September 20 to 27, 2026, featuring the historic instruments in St. Nikolai, St. Jakobi, and St. Marien. The program comprises approximately sixteen events, including classical organ concerts, free improvisations, silent film concerts with live organ accompaniment, and children's concerts. The festival will also feature choir concerts, a Jazz & Organ program item, an organ night, as well as guided tours and excursions to the instruments of the Organ City.
