Five days of spring Volksfest in the Spandau garden city of Staaken – tradition for over 70 years
The Staakener Kinder- und Volksfest is one of Berlin's oldest Volksfeste – the first editions took place in the early 1950s. In 2024, the festival marked its 72nd edition; in 2026, according to the organizer, it will be the 64th counted edition (depending on the counting method). This makes it one of the city's most traditional district festivals – in a district that itself has a special history.
The Gartenstadt Staaken was built between 1914 and 1917 according to plans by Paul Schmitthenner as a model settlement – with low terraced houses, village-like street layouts, workshop buildings, and an architectural consistency that is now a listed monument. It is located in the west of Spandau, close to the Brandenburg state border, and despite several urban planning interventions, it has retained its village-like, cooperative character. The festival grounds at Ungewitterweg are located directly within the garden city.
From May 13th to 17th, 2026, the festival grounds will be open for five days. On the program:
The opening hours follow the traditional Volksfest rhythm:
The Spandau district maintains its Volksfest tradition with particular tenacity – in addition to the Staakener Kinder- und Volksfest, there is the Spandauer Pfingstfest at Scharfe Lanke, the Spandauer Havelfest, and the Spandauer Oktoberfest at the Zitadelle. Volksfeste here are not tourist attractions but part of the residents' annual rhythm. Ascension Day – the central festival day of the Staakener Fest – is a public holiday in Berlin and traditionally the occasion for family outings.
From Wednesday, May 13th to Sunday, May 17th, 2026, the Staakener Kinder- und Volksfest will once again take place on the festival grounds at Ungewitterweg in the Gartenstadt Staaken. The date spans Ascension Day (Thursday, May 14th) – traditionally the central festival day with the largest family turnout.
