About Jüttelsbergtreffen

On Sunday, May 24, 2026, at 2:00 PM, the 4th Jüttelsbergtreffen will take place on the Jüttelsberg – a scenic mountain directly on the German-Czech border between Neusalza-Spremberg and Schluckenau (Šluknov). This cross-border Volksfest (popular festival) brings together the citizens of the Five-Community Region: Neusalza-Spremberg, Schluckenau, Sohland an der Spree, Steinigtwolmsdorf, and Lipová u Šluknova. You will experience a deliberately small, heartfelt gathering with music, regional specialties from both sides of the border, and conversations that transcend national boundaries. Free admission.

Border Meeting at a Symbolic Location

The Jüttelsberg (483 m above sea level) is not just a scenic mountain in the Lusatian Highlands – it is a symbol. It lies directly on the German-Czech border, shared by five communities: Neusalza-Spremberg (DE), Schluckenau / Šluknov (CZ), Sohland an der Spree (DE), Steinigtwolmsdorf (DE), and Lipová u Šluknova (CZ). The Jüttelsbergtreffen, which first took place in 2023 and is heading into its fourth edition in 2026, brings these five places together once a year for a citizens' meeting on the mountain.

What Happens at the Meeting?

The program remains deliberately manageable – not a commercial Volksfest, but a genuine citizens' encounter. Starting at 2:00 PM, the mayors of the five communities gather on the Jüttelsberg, deliver short speeches, and hoist the flags of their towns. A brass band from one of the communities (a different one each year – alternating between German and Czech) plays traditional pieces. Food and drinks come from both sides of the border – Saxon bratwurst alongside Czech dumplings, Radeberger Pils next to Velkopopovický Kozel, Stollen next to Vánočka. Conversations, walks on the mountain, and short hiking tours on the surrounding high trails round off the afternoon.

A 30-Year-Old Tradition Since 2023

Unlike the centuries-old Volksfeste in Upper Lusatia, the Jüttelsbergtreffen is young: the first meeting took place in 2023 – an initiative by the five communities seeking a common forum after decades of separation by the old GDR-CSSR border (1948–1989) and after the EU enlargement in 2004. 2026 marks the 4th edition – the format is currently establishing itself as a firm tradition in the border region.

Neusalza-Spremberg and the Lusatian Highlands

The town of Neusalza-Spremberg, with around 3,200 inhabitants, is located in the Görlitz district, in the southern part of Upper Lusatia, at the transition to the Lusatian Highlands. It is known for its Reiterhaus, the oldest surviving Umgebindehaus (a type of traditional timber-frame house) in Saxony (built in 1660). The region is characterized by the typical Upper Lusatian Umgebinde construction – a mix of half-timbered, log, and solid construction. Visitors to the Jüttelsbergtreffen can combine their visit with a hike up the Strážný mountain (CZ side) or a tour through the Spree headwaters area.

Jüttelsbergtreffen — edition 2026

The 4th Jüttelsbergtreffen in 2026 will take place on Sunday, May 24, at 2:00 PM on the Jüttelsberg at the German-Czech border. A meeting of citizens and mayors from the Five-Community Region: Neusalza-Spremberg, Schluckenau, Sohland, Steinigtwolmsdorf, Lipová. Brass band, regional specialties from both sides of the border. Free admission.

2026 Edition — 4th Run

The Jüttelsbergtreffen enters its fourth round in 2026. After its premiere in 2023 and three successful editions, the format is solidifying as a firm tradition in the border region. On the Jüttelsberg, mayors and citizens of the five communities gather for a deliberately low-key meeting – not a commercial event, but a genuine citizens' encounter with speeches, music, and refreshments.

A brass band from one of the five communities (the exact selection will be announced by the town of Neusalza-Spremberg shortly before the date) will perform in the afternoon. Food and drinks will be available from both sides of the border – Saxon classics alongside Czech specialties. If you're lucky, you might get Vánočka (Czech yeast pastry) with your coffee.
