Franconian Wine Festival in the Vineyards above Schweinfurt
The Spring Wine Festival at Peterstirn is one of the most well-known wine festivals in the Schweinfurt area. Peterstirn is a vineyard site on the southern outskirts of Schweinfurt, located above the Main River, and is one of the northernmost wine-growing regions of Franconia. Weingut Dahms cultivates its vines here and hosts the wine festival on the slope every spring.
Classic Franconian wines are produced in the region: Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Riesling, and Spätburgunder. The Bocksbeutel—the typical bulbous bottle shape for Franconia—is as much a part of the region's identity as the term 'trocken' (dry) as the preferred taste style. At the Spring Wine Festival, wines from the current vintage are served, as well as Secco and house specialties.
Unlike many wine festivals held in the city, the Spring Wine Festival takes place directly in the vineyards. The event area directly borders the rows of vines. This creates an intimate atmosphere and gives visitors a direct impression of the wine landscape. Due to the hillside location, access is only possible on foot—car access is blocked during the festival.
Schweinfurt is located on the northern edge of the Franconian wine-growing region. Wine has been cultivated here since the Middle Ages, but only in recent decades has Schweinfurt's wine profile clearly distinguished itself from the better-known Mainfranken region around Würzburg, Volkach, and Iphofen. Peterstirn is one of the oldest vineyard sites in the city.
Live music provides the ambiance on all festival evenings. The range includes regional cover bands, folk duos, and occasionally more classical ensembles—fitting the sophisticated wine festival character, catering more to the 30+ generation than festival youth. Accompanying this is Franconian festival cuisine: Bratwurst, Hausmacher (traditional cold cuts), bread, and cheese.
The 2026 Spring Wine Festival spans five days, utilizing the extended Pentecost weekend: opening on Friday evening, May 29, 2026, festival operations through Saturday and Pentecost Sunday, concluding on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. Festival hours generally run from late afternoon until after sunset.
