Spring awakening in Tübingen's old town with crafts and regional specialities
When Tübingen's old town turns into the Spring Market on a Sunday in March, the day belongs to strollers, food lovers and families. From the Holzmarkt with its view of the Stiftskirche down to the island in the Neckar, stalls, small stages and food courts spread out across the city. The romantic half-timbered backdrop of the former imperial city on the Neckar provides one of the most beautiful settings imaginable for a market.
Around 70 exhibitors (based on previous years' figures) present their wares: regional and national traders and producers offer crafts, cut flowers and spring décor, regional and Mediterranean products, as well as food and drinks. From hand-thrown pottery from the Swabian Alb to French cheese and Italian ham, spring onions and the first bunches of wild garlic — the range is deliberately broad.
Alongside the market, a Sunday shopping event runs from 1 to 6 pm. The shops in the old town open their doors, some cafés offer special promotions, and the fashion and design boutiques hold small launch parties for their spring collections. Anyone who wants to round off the weekend can combine the Sunday Spring Market with the traditional antiques market on Saturday, which is part of the same "shopping weekend".
What sets the Spring Market apart from many others is the Tübingen crowd: a mix of students from the oldest university town in Baden-Württemberg, long-established Stuttgart commuters, families from the district and visitors from the Schönbuch, the Swabian Alb and Lake Constance. This mix produces a peculiarly relaxed yet culturally aware atmosphere that can only arise in a small, dense old town.
The 2026 Spring Market is part of a full shopping weekend (21–22 March 2026) in Tübingen's old town. On Saturday, an antiques market is also held, so market-goers can plan for both days. Free entry.
On the day before (Saturday, 21.03.2026), the traditional antiques market is also held. Specific live programme highlights will be published on www.tuemarkt.de in the weeks before the event.
Free entry.
By train: Tübingen Hauptbahnhof can be reached from Stuttgart in 50–60 minutes (RE and IRE Stuttgart–Tübingen). From the station, it's a 10-minute walk to the old town. By car: A8/A81 → B27 to Tübingen. During the day, use the car parks at the edge of the old town (König, Neue Aula).
The old town is car-free — sturdy shoes are recommended for the cobblestones. Dogs on a short lead are welcome. As the Spring Market takes place in all weathers, it's worth keeping an umbrella in your bag.
Free entry.
