Festival of regional flavours at Höllberghof between Langengrassau and Wüstermarke
The municipality of Heideblick is located in the Dahme-Spreewald district, south of Berlin and west of Cottbus, in the middle of the Niederlausitz region and on the edge of the Spreewald. Heideblick consists of several districts — the Spreewälder Gurkentag takes place on the Höllberghof farm between Langengrassau and Wüstermarke. The Höllberghof is a traditional farm regularly used for regional festivals and farm markets.
The Spreewälder Gurke has been registered as an EU protected geographical indication (PGI) since 1999 — only cucumbers grown in the Spreewald and pickled according to traditional recipes are allowed to bear the name. The Gurkentag honours this tradition: many of the exhibitors are Spreewald cucumber farms and pickling businesses that offer their specialities directly — from classic spiced cucumbers to mustard cucumbers and garlic cucumbers.
Around 30 stalls gather at the Höllberghof with Spreewald products: cucumbers, horseradish, linseed oil, honey, sausage, bread, herbs, juice. In addition, there are traditional craft demonstrations — flax processing, cucumber pickling, basket weaving — and performances by regional folklore groups. There are also hands-on activities and play stations for children. Between 1,500 and 2,000 visitors are expected.
The Spreewälder Gurkentag is not a mass tourist market, but a deliberately regional festival. If you want to experience a day in the Spreewald beyond the punt boat rides and tourist paths, this is the place for you: an intimate farm atmosphere, direct contact with producers, Sorbian-Wendish cultural elements, and a setting that showcases the Niederlausitz region at its most tranquil. Admission is free, parking is subject to a charge. The event is organised by the Spreewaldverein e.V. in Lübben.
