A New City Festival for Spenge
Spenger Kant is the new city festival of the East Westphalian town of Spenge. The premiere is on Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12, 2026. The format replaces the traditional Lange-Straßen-Fest, which had been on hiatus since 2020 — due to the pandemic and logistical reasons. With Spenger Kant, the town is daring a new beginning: more focused, more intimate, more identity-building.
The Name: Spenger Kant
The name is a double pun: It refers to Immanuel-Kant-Straße, a central axis of Spenge's city center, and at the same time to the colloquial “Kant” (= corner, area, district). The festival area extends around this street, thus connecting the Enlightenment philosopher namesake with the neighborhood.
2026 Program — Culinary, Funfair, Culture
The festival follows the motto “Culinary – Funfair – Culture” with two clearly structured days:
- Saturday, July 11, 2026 — Brockante (Flea Market)
- Large city center flea market around Immanuel-Kant-Straße
- Private households, antique and flea market vendors
- Accompanying food trucks and drink stands
- Live music on a small stage
- Sunday, July 12, 2026 — Day of Associations
- Spenge associations present their work at stands and activities
- Sports demonstrations, music clubs, marksmen, cultural associations
- Family program and children's activities
- Grand finale on Sunday afternoon
Spenge — Kant Town in the Herford District
Spenge, with around 14,000 inhabitants, is a small town in the Herford district in East Westphalia-Lippe, northeast of Bielefeld. The town has a special connection to the Enlightenment: it maintains an intensive tradition of remembrance of Immanuel Kant, even though he did not actually come from Spenge — the street's naming follows a regional cultural-pedagogical initiative. “Spenger Kant” picks up on this identity-building appreciation and makes the city festival an equally local and cultural event.
A Format with Future Potential
With its premiere in 2026, Spenge is consciously opting for a smaller but more focused format compared to the former Lange-Straßen-Fest. If the premiere is successful, its establishment as an annual highlight in Spenge's city calendar is likely.
