Advent Market in Small-Town OWL Format

The Spenge Christmas Market takes place annually on the third weekend of Advent around the historic St. Martin's Church and the Mühlenburg in Spenge. The organizer is the city of Spenge — the exhibitors are predominantly from the immediate region in Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL). In 2026, the third weekend of Advent falls on December 12th and 13th — official confirmation will be provided by the city administration in the autumn months.

St. Martin's Church and Mühlenburg as a Backdrop

The historic St. Martin's Church with its tower and the nearby Mühlenburg — a former princely residence from the 17th century — form the historic backdrop for the market. Wooden stalls are set up in the square in front of the church and along the adjacent paths. The fairy lights on the church and Mühlenburg give the market a special atmosphere, distinguishing it from larger, more commercial Advent markets in the region.

Regional Exhibitors and Mulled Wine

The exhibitors are mainly local clubs, artisans, and restaurateurs from Spenge and the surrounding OWL communities (Enger, Bünde, Herford). The offerings range from mulled wine and hot drinks to bratwurst and potato pancakes, as well as local handicrafts, gingerbread, and gift items. Spenge's school and church choirs, music clubs, and brass ensembles take turns on the small stage.

Spenge is a town in the district of Herford in Ostwestfalen-Lippe with around 14,500 inhabitants, located on the edge of the Wiehengebirge hills. The Mühlenburg, a wedding gift from a Count of Tecklenburg, is considered the town's most striking historical building. Spenge is known as a quiet small town with a well-maintained club scene — the Christmas market is one of the central cultural highlights of the year.
