Festive procession of the parish of St. Laurentius in the Franconian Switzerland
The Corpus Christi procession in Obertrubach – a municipality in the Forchheim district on the edge of Franconian Switzerland – is a Catholic festival with over four hundred years of tradition. The parish of St. Laurentius belongs to the Archdiocese of Bamberg and the pastoral care area of Franconian Switzerland. As in most Catholic communities in the region, Corpus Christi (the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ) is celebrated with a solemn procession through the parish village.
It begins at 8:30 AM with the festive mass in the baroque parish church of St. Laurentius. Afterwards, the procession moves through the village center of Obertrubach. The houses along the route are festively decorated, the processional path is marked with young birch trees (a Franconian tradition), and the procession stops at four station altars for Gospel readings and blessings. The procession is accompanied by the music band, the communion children in white dresses, the local clubs, the fire brigade in uniform, and delegations from neighboring parishes.
After the procession, the parish invites all parishioners, guests, and club delegations to an early morning pint (Frühschoppen) around the community center. The morning concludes in a convivial atmosphere with Franconian snacks, beer, and coffee. The Frühschoppen also serves as an important social event for the village community.
Obertrubach, with around 1,900 inhabitants, is located in the Trubachtal – one of the most beautiful valley formations in Franconian Switzerland, between Forchheim and Bayreuth. Franconian Switzerland is one of the most important hiking destinations in Franconia, known for its typical karst rocks, caves, and castles. Visitors attending the Corpus Christi procession can combine the day with a hike in the Trubachtal or a visit to the Egloffstein castle ruins.
The 2026 edition is confirmed in the official event calendar of the parish of St. Laurentius Obertrubach: Sunday, June 7, 2026, starting at 8:30 AM. The parish explicitly invites all parishioners, clubs, and delegations to participate in the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ.
The procession follows the traditional route through the village center of Obertrubach. Homeowners decorate their entrances with birch branches, flowers, and images of saints – a tradition particularly strong in Franconian Switzerland. At four station altars along the route, the priest stops for the reading of the Gospel and a blessing with the monstrance. The procession is accompanied by the local music band, the communion children, traditional costume groups, the volunteer fire brigade, and delegations from neighboring parishes.
The processional route leads through the streets of the parish village, decorated with birch branches.
