About Japanmarkt Berlin
Japanmarkt Berlin — edition 2026
The 22nd edition of Japanmarkt Berlin follows the established day format: 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with timed performance slots and a continuously open designer market and food zone. The opening block features traditional Japanese performances, followed by slots mixing Samurai martial arts demonstrations, Taiko drumming, and a Kimono show. Workshops run parallel in several rooms.
Special focus in 2026: the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū Hyōhō school from Tokyo – a martial arts school over 200 years old, demonstrating its traditional techniques live. This is complemented by Taiko ensembles, whose rhythmic drumming choreographies are festival classics. Workshops in Origami (paper folding) and Shodō (calligraphy) are aimed at both beginners and advanced participants.

Berlin's Japanese Community
Berlin boasts one of Europe's most vibrant Japanese diasporas – with its own bookshops, design stores, restaurants, and cultural associations. For over two decades, Japanmarkt Berlin has been the most important public meeting point for this scene, as well as an open door for Berliners and tourists wanting to discover everyday Japanese culture. The event is organized by Japan Events GbR, which runs several Japan-oriented formats in Berlin.
Festsaal Kreuzberg on the Flutgraben
The main venue for the 22nd Cherry Blossom Festival is the Festsaal Kreuzberg in the Postbahnhof area, directly on the Flutgraben (Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, bordering Treptow-Köpenick). Its location by the water, with a large hall and outdoor space, is ideal for an indoor/outdoor format with multiple parallel zones: designer market, food zone, performance stage, and workshop rooms.
Program Balancing Tradition and Pop Culture
The program deliberately follows two parallel paths: On one side, traditional Japanese arts with roots stretching back centuries – Samurai martial arts from the Hokushin-Ittō-Ryū school (Tokyo, over 200 years old), Taiko drumming, Kimono show. On the other side, contemporary Japanese design culture: ceramics, stationery, fashion, streetwear, manga, and anime merchandise. This is complemented by workshops where visitors can try their hand at folding Origami, practicing calligraphy, or learning basic Japanese.
Hanami in Berlin
The festival coincides with the Japanese Hanami tradition – the celebration of cherry blossoms, which is the most important seasonal festival in Japan between late March and mid-May. In Berlin, the date is aligned with the blooming period in Central Germany: early May. The event thus combines lived Japanese culture with a Berlin spring event.
