Five-day Kirchweih in the heart of Franconian Switzerland
Muggendorf, picturesquely situated in the Wiesenttal valley, is one of the most traditional places in Franconian Switzerland and a popular climatic health resort. The Muggendorfer Kerwa is part of the dense network of Franconian Kirchweihen and is traditionally celebrated over five days on the second weekend in August.
As is customary at Franconian Kirchweihen, the raising of the Kerwabaum, the dancing of the Kerwapaare (festival couples), brass band music, and convivial hospitality characterize the festival. A varied program of music, dance, and Franconian conviviality unfolds in the village center over the five days.
The Kerwa falls right in the middle of the summer season in Franconian Switzerland, one of Bavaria's most popular hiking and climbing areas. Locals and holiday guests come together for a lively festival that combines old customs with the region's tourist vitality.
Muggendorf belongs to the municipality of Wiesenttal in the Forchheim district, in the Upper Franconia administrative region of Bavaria. The Kerwa is firmly anchored in the customs calendar of Franconian Switzerland.
