One Island, 24 Churches, One Organist
The Rügen Organ Tour is an unusual classical music project: over five consecutive days, Dresden's Frauenkirche cantor Matthias Grünert travels across the island of Rügen, giving 24 organ concerts in 24 different churches. The series is programmed so that no single piece is performed twice within the entire tour — a tribute to the enormous stylistic diversity of Rügen's organ landscape.
Sagard as an Important Stop
St. Michael's Church in Sagard is one of the island's large and well-known organ locations and is regularly featured in programmes. The church's Kindten Organ, a resonant instrument with its own character, has been the venue for concerts by regional and national organists for years. For the Rügen Organ Tour, Grünert comes from the world-famous Frauenkirche in Dresden — an encounter that extends the church concert life on the Jasmund peninsula far beyond the local scope.
What the Organ Tour is About
- 24 concerts in 24 churches on Rügen
- One soloist (Matthias Grünert), a cohesive concert dramaturgy
- Patronage: Minister President Manuela Schwesig (MV)
- A mix of large, well-known organs (Bergen, Sagard, Gingst) and small village church organs

Sagard and its Church
Sagard is located in the north of the island of Rügen in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, nestled between the chalk cliffs of Jasmund National Park and the Bodden coast. St. Michael's Church dominates the town centre; its Kindten Organ is considered one of the island's important historical instruments. Concertgoers often combine the evening with a day at Königsstuhl or in the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Sellin, or Sassnitz.
