Spyker Castle — Rügen's Oldest Secular Building

Spyker Castle in the Spyker district of the municipality Ostseebad Glowe (Vorpommern-Rügen district) is one of the oldest and most significant secular buildings on the island of Rügen. First documented in 1318, it stands in its current form as a rectangular, three-story plastered building with four distinctive round towers from the 16th century. With over 760 years of history, Spyker is the oldest secular building on Rügen — nestled in a spacious park with old oaks and linden trees, carefully renovated in the 1990s.

The Market and Its Concept

The Schlossmarkt takes place every Monday from mid-May to mid-October in the castle courtyard – the inner courtyard between the main building and outbuildings. The market is organized by the castle itself with the aim of providing a platform for regional artisans and keeping the historic ensemble alive as a cultural venue. The offerings vary from market day to market day – usually, 15-25 exhibitors are present.

The Assortment

Typical offerings: pottery and ceramics from island workshops, amber jewelry from Sassnitz and Binz, felted and knitted textiles, fashion designers from Stralsund, homemade jams, smoked fish from the Bodden waters, organic honey, sea buckthorn products, small books by island authors, natural cosmetics, driftwood sculptures. Some exhibitors come every year, others change seasonally.

Culture Barn, Sculpture Park, and Exhibitions

Visitors to the market should also take a look at the castle: The main building hosts changing photography and art exhibitions – such as "Arno Schidlowski: Jasmund | The Sun Moon" (January 10 – April 12, 2026), a homage to the Jasmund peninsula. The Kulturscheune (Culture Barn) in a former outbuilding serves as a concert and event venue, and the sculpture park in the surrounding grounds displays works by regional and supra-regional sculptors. Thus, the market is combined with a rich cultural program.
