Three-day district festival in northern Bielefeld
Every year on the third weekend of September, the Jürmker Herbstmarkt transforms the town center of Jöllenbeck, a district of Bielefeld, into a colorful festival mile. For three days, from Friday evening to Sunday evening, amusement rides, food stalls, arts and crafts booths, and club stands line the streets. The name "Jürmker" is the Ostwestfalen-Platt variant of "Jöllenbecker" – a linguistic marker that fits the local sense of identity.
The Herbstmarkt's established program includes several key elements: a large flea market, which is often fully booked weeks in advance; an arts and crafts market featuring ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and woodwork from the region; classic funfair attractions with rides for children and teenagers; and a Sunday with open shops, during which local retailers in the district open their stores.
Behind the market is a local alliance of clubs, retailers, and the Heimatverein Jöllenbeck (Jöllenbeck Local Heritage Association). As is common at many Ostwestfalen district festivals, volunteer work forms the backbone – stand management, setup and dismantling, catering at the club stands, from the carnival society to the sports club. The result is a market with a high degree of recognition and its own identity, distinct from standardized city festivals.
Jöllenbeck is one of Bielefeld's districts, located in the north of Bielefeld, at the transition between the city and the rural area of the Herford district. Until its incorporation into Bielefeld in 1973, Jöllenbeck was an independent municipality – its historical market status in northern Bielefeld is still clearly evident today. The Herbstmarkt builds on this tradition and is one of the district's most important events for self-affirmation throughout the year.
You'll meet families from Jöllenbeck, Theesen, Vilsendorf, and Schildesche here, as well as day-trippers from Bielefeld-Mitte, Herford, Spenge, and Enger. The atmosphere is convivial, warmly Ostwestfalen, without urban hustle and bustle. If you're planning a long Saturday stroll – flea market in the morning, arts and crafts at noon, currywurst and beer in the afternoon, rides in the evening – this is the place to be.
The 2026 edition of the Jürmker Herbstmarkt will take place from Friday, September 18th to Sunday, September 20th, 2026 – as usual on the third weekend of September.
